Dodger Stadium's worst showing ever

08:11 AM ET 09.01 | Earlier this week, about 30 minutes before a Dodgers game, a picture of the near-empty stands at Dodger Stadium made the rounds on Twitter, and things got worse Wednesday. It's the smallest crowd I've seen in my 23 years of following the Dodgers. It might be the smallest crowd in the 49-year history of Dodger Stadium. The official attendance is 27,767, the second-lowest of the season, but that accounts for the number of tickets sold, not the number of actual people in seats. This is surely the worst. This is surely not even close. Eleven sections are completely vacant. Most of the pavilion sections are in single digits. The left-field corner section, previously known as Mannywood, is Deadwood, inhabited by precisely 20 people.

Don't go to Deadwood if your name is Wild Bill.

Do you think it's because EVERYONE is tired of the McCourts.

The McCourts are ruining baseball in LA. I wonder how the attendance is for the Angels?

That's what happens in Cali, not really a baseball town. Spoiled rich kids don't care about Mattingly and thd Derdgers!

You know nothing. LA's a great baseball town and has been for years. The Dodgers used to draw 3MM a year until McCourt drove the fans away. The LA fans hate the guy so much they are refusing to put money in his pockets. Get rid of that jackass and the place will sell out again.

I'm not sure where this comes from except complete ignorance. I guess you've never been to Dodger Stadium. I'd stack their fans up with the most rabid in the country. Apparently you've bought into the myth that the west coast is laid back & nobody cares about anything. I assume you think the baseball fan world starts and ends with the Red Sox and Yankees. If so, you are qualified to work at ESPN. Congrats.

You nailed it Moose - the McCourts have done what no earthquake or mudslide could have done - tanked baseball in L.A.

There have been season where the Dodgers drew 4M fans. 4M!!! To see what the McCourts have done is shocking. I would not be unhappy if someone blew a couple of caps into the back of Frank & Jamie's heads. At least the world would be rid of a couple of virulent parasites.

Maybe they should move back to Brooklyn? There's plenty of baseball fans in NY.

The Angels are 5th in MLB in attendance at 2.5M so far. The Dodgers are actually 10th in attendance at 2.6M (3-4 more home dates in the books). So the attendance overall isn't bad, it's just that the fan base is bailing on the team as the season goes on. Most of the attendance is from season tickets which are coming disguised as empty seats.

Agreed. I'm sure Dodger "fans" trying to kill a guy rooting for the Giants will help attendance. Maybe they should have a "try to frighten, punch and put fans into the hospital day".

September 1, 2011  10:33 AM ET

I find it utterly captivating that 27000 people with pre-paid tickets did not deign the LA Dodgers worthy of attendance.

How delightful.

Well...actually....the Dodgers are only 10th in ticket sales. Throught the turnstile attendance is not even close.

It's amazing, huh? And their bleachers don't even smell like piss. Go figure.

the team sucks---why pay big money for tickets and obscene prices for beer and food to watch those overpaid losers play baseball?
