06:25 AM ET 09.06 | The goal is for Green Bay running backs Ryan Grant and James Starks to get an equal amount of rushing attempts Thursday night against New Orleans. That's the plan for now, anyway. With a healthy Grant back after missing nearly all of the 2010 season, the Packers are faced with the new challenge of merging his comeback with the progression of Starks, whose late season emergence as a rookie paced the Packers through the playoffs. And the only way to figure it out literally is to let things play out.

As do all other NFL teams?

September 6, 2011  07:31 AM ET

Wow- we are all amazed........that they would even make this a thread ?!?!?!

September 6, 2011  07:47 AM ET

Whatever ;) .... PACK with a Passing Game ....

but, I want to see rookie, Alex Green at RB too ....

September 6, 2011  07:49 AM ET

Grant is fragile and they want to try to have him for over half the year, makes sense.

September 6, 2011  07:57 AM ET

So in the 3rd preseason game PACK vs Colts ... the one that most teams play first string for a Half ... 50 Passing plays 300 Yards / 19 Running plays 45 yards ....

So how is this going to Work between Grant / Starks ....

Rock / Paper / Scissors ... you get the carrier ;)

September 6, 2011  08:10 AM ET

They want to cut in half the times Grant drops the ball!

September 6, 2011  08:14 AM ET

Does it really matter? Teams defense for the packer passing game, any reasonable back can do well running the ball there. If they can pick up blitzes, then they play.

The only way to extend the life of a running back is to NOT play him every down. The days of the every-down back are long gone. Even passing teams like the Pats platoon their RBs, so why should this be news?

Oh, because there isn't any real news, or they can't be bothered to look for it. Got it.

I guess that means we won't see Peterson and Chris Johnson in 2 years.

Next post will be about the virtues of wiping after potty.

Look at Clinton Portis. 29, and he can't get a job with the Seahawks.

Peterson may be a special case, but even so he'd likely get a few more years at the end of his career if they'd let somebody else carry the ball once in a while. Of course, when your offense was designed by Childress, "hand off to Peterson" is about as complicated as it was going to get.

Chris Johnson is going to be asked to carry the ball way too much, based on the money they'll give him. At that rate, 2 years might be a stretch.

So why draft Toby Gerhart and Javon Ringer in the first place if A.P. and CJ2K are still gonna get 300 plus carries a season?

Balance... An average running game and an above average passing game should do the trick... again

Gonna be tough to repeat, only the really best teams, 49ers, Broncos, Pats have claimed that spot in the last 20 plus years. Not to say they couldn't.

Yup, repeating is a hard thing to do. Lots of teams are able to retain enough talent to repeat but that's not enough. You need to avoid the key injuries, get a few lucky bounces during the season, and be playing hot when the playoffs come. Packers did that last year. Had a lot of injuries but had Rodgers and Matthews when they needed them so could get past the other injuries. Lose either one of those guys and forget the SB.
