Terry Bowden has expressed interest in succeeding Rich Rodriguez as West Virginia's head coach. Bowden, who grew up in Morgantown and attended WVU, has been out of coaching since quitting at Auburn during the 1998 season. Bowden's father, Bobby, coached the Mountaineers from 1970-75, going 42-26 before leaving for Florida State.

Auburn wasn't as good of a job when Terry was there as it is now. It certainly wasn't a bad job, but Auburn was not considered a top-tier program (in the country or the SEC) like it is now.

1998? Ten years is a lot of time out of the game.

any one could have gone 11-0 with that auburn team, players that weren't terry's, once they were gone he bailed. Terry is not the answer.

HikieHokieHi I hear this all the time. If a coach wins they are not his players. If he loses then it's hit fault. You must be getting ready to run for President in 2008. If you are the coach then they are your players in good and in bad.

It's his by acclamation.

I wasn't saying WVU was a better program, there's no doubt that Auburn has been a better program for a lot longer. I was just saying that Auburn wasn't all that great of a job back then as it has been for the past decade.

If it is true, and he wants to coach there, then they should seriously consider him...He went 47-16 at auburn, and had a similar record at his first job at Samford...He has roots in the area and could go a long ways towards building the bridge between WVU boosters and the school....

BrSee ....Exactly. He was the coach of the year that year. Named by the press and the other coaches..Give him his due..

Why would you hire a guy that looked worse than Brent Musberger?

December 18, 2007  03:09 PM ET

if he's such a great coach why hasn't he coached in ten years? Hasn't even been considered. He went 11-0 his first year at Auburn, he deserves credit for not screwing that up. But, BrSee, sometimes coaches receive good teams. Happens a lot when a coach jumps to the nfl or another school. You can't judge a college coach by one year, especially the first. Being a successful college coach isn't about one good year. It's about building a solid and consistent system. A good coach will keep the success going or bring success to a failing system. Auburn withered away under TB's control. He took off to tv when he couldn't get another coaching job.

Who are some better options - - and not Brian Kelly who just signed an extension.

Saban will interview to force Alabama to increase his $$$contract and Schiano will interview to force the state of NJ to get those luxury boxes financed. And both will turn WVU down.

December 19, 2007  10:26 AM ET

Are you kidding me? If WVU wants their football program to regress then by all means hire Terry Bowden.

December 19, 2007  02:03 PM ET

Go, Terry! Go, Terry! It's your birthday! Go, Terry!

I'm concerned that NCAA schools don't pay enough money to the Bowden family already. Let's root for Terry!

I encourage WVU to hire Borat for the coaching position.

Very nice!
