08:25 AM ET 09.07 | A few years ago, his decision may have been different. Tomas Vokoun confirmed earlier today that he received a contract offer this summer from Detroit that was similar to the one-year, $1.5 million deal he signed with Washington on July 2. The Caps' new goalie said he chose Washington over Detroit for a few reasons, most notably the fact that he believes the Caps are closer to winning it all than the Wings. "Looking at Washington's lineup compared to Detroit, they are comparable teams," Vokoun said. ... He later added: "My belief is this team has a better chance to win than Detroit does. And they showed a lot more interest, so that was the key for me, too."

Interesting choice, thinking the Capitals have a better shot than the Wings. He obviously hasn't noticed the guys who put up big numbers during the regular season then disappear after April 10 in Washington. Detroit doesn't have players like that.

Now Stranger.........it's merely been a 37 year string of bad luck. Very soon the "Remember '98" ! bumper stickers will appear. :-)

I'm glad he did too. I don't want to think about a Wings team with Vokoun in the net.

I'd check him for a concussion.

So...did the Wings decide to go with Lidstrom in net instead? Is that why his pic is there?

No not in net Danny, that's just silly...No instead it's just another example of the Wings new media program showcasing their youth movement...

Agreed. Very good points.

Guess we will find out in about 9 months if he was correct or pregnant

1998?
Sure... Canuck eh? recalls that year with great reverence. It was the year that the FDA approved Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence.
As well who could forget:
Bill Clinton;
Jean Chetien;
Tony Blair.

Windows 98 and the 3 Tenors...and Celine Dion!

Vokoun wanted Cup, turned down Wings...

Too many pucks to the head, or too much bathtub vodka. The only way I can justify his illogic.

He really, really wants that President's Trophy...and then to play golf all summer.

September 7, 2011  10:47 AM ET

Washington has the wrong Euros to ever win a Cup. Kind of like Vancouver.

He also said that he wanted to go to a team in the eastern conference so that his travel schedule would be easier and allow him more time to see his family. He also gets to go down to Florida several more times this season which lets him see his family then too.
Apparently he asked several current and former players that said that the locker room situation was great in DC and that was a major factor as well. He wanted to enjoy playing hockey every day with good people (obviously I am not saying that Detroit has a bad locker room).

Ha! Bad choice, buddy! Enjoy exiting in the first round again. Well, better than the Panthers granted, but still ways from the Cup....

Travel schedule easier...please....it's not like he has to worry about running through the airport to catch a last minute flight only to end up at some second rate hotel room. Maybe he was concerned that if he ended up in Detroit, he might get called out in the dressing room if he stinks out the joint a few too many times.

Maybe Lidstrom was the Red Wing most upset that Vokoun went to the Caps instead of the Wings?

I bet the tipping point came when he realized that Ovie was in such good physical shape.
