08:04 AM ET 09.08 | If it's true that a team should be built around a great quarterback, what is Pete Carroll up to in Seattle? And why is he so convinced that it won't be a misguided attempt to buck convention? It's hard not to wince when Carroll says he wants a game manager at quarterback. ... Can Carroll win this way? And, if so, does he have the right athletes to make his quirky, crystallized vision work? Those questions represent the greatest bit of intrigue as the Seahawks open a season without Matt Hasselbeck for the first time in 10 years. Tarvaris Jackson replaces Hasselbeck as the Seahawks' starting quarterback, but the job description has changed.

Got rid of a good QB to bring in Jackson... Didn't make sense at all, especially considering a playoff victory last season.

September 8, 2011  08:07 AM ET

Good luck with T-Jack ...he sucks!

September 8, 2011  08:09 AM ET

Agreed. From what I've seen of Jackson, I don't understand this at all.

September 8, 2011  08:09 AM ET

The risk of picking LUCK!!

September 8, 2011  08:16 AM ET

Jackson hasn't impressed anyone. I have no choice but to hope he improves vast and fast.

September 8, 2011  08:17 AM ET

His tenure as coach is not for long.

September 8, 2011  08:18 AM ET

I'd be more interested in the Toronto Argonauts' QB situation.

Maybe a season longer than his last stint in the NFL. By that time the NCAA might let him come back to coach a college team without much of a fuss.

if he does wonders with that crappy roster in Seattle then he'll keep his job but a .500 record won't do it.

There ya go.

Well sure because at the rate other schools are racking up violations he'll be long in the rear view mirror (shrugs shoulders).

I think that's what Pete is hoping for...

September 8, 2011  08:53 AM ET

He wants a game manager? OK, with the roster he has, what are his other options?

"We want a game manager" really means "We don't have a top-ten quarterback, so we'll go to the drug store and get some lipstick for Miss Piggy."

It's really hard to not think that Carroll is blowing this season to get his hands on Andrew Luck or be re-united with Barkley. I mean no one else in the league thinks Jackson is barely above a serviceable back-up, and with Charlie Whitehurst obviously outplaying him in the preseason he still sticks with Jackson? I know it's hard to believe a team, any team, would purposely blow a year... but in this case I can't imagine what else is going on.

Folks are starting to whisper the same about the Niners...

Carroll blows as an NFL coach. He needs to go back to school.

Pete Carroll is going to succeed at one thing this season. Getting the #1 pick to draft Andrew Luck. If that in fact is why he is employing 2 fourth string QB's, then he is a genius.

It's not going to look like such a great idea when he gets out-bungled by Cincinatti.

The Bengals never succeed at anything, even failing.
