NBA willing to sacrifice preseason?

08:12 AM ET 09.08 | There are positive signs in the fact the NBA and the players' union are meeting, but is there enough time to work out a deal? [David Stern] pointed out on Wednesday that, to save the season, "We have three weeks." Training camp is supposed to start in less than a month. When the NFL was in a lockout, there was an emphasis on saving training camp, but according to a league source, that's not necessarily as important for the NBA. First of all, pro football is a lot more complicated to coach and requires more thorough conditioning. Second, the source said, "Financially, the NFL makes a killing off the preseason. The NBA doesn't. We play in some pretty far-off spots. And our preseason games aren't televised much."

Yeah, lets watch this spill over into late October... Then we won't just be talking pre-season but also a shortened season or none at all... I wonder if a shortened season is even worth it... The alternative is shuffling the season Calendar. i.e. go the normal 82 and start in Feb, March or when ever they reach their agreement - meaning season start dates change going forward...

Idiots!!! You are killing your product if you haven't done so already.

We addressed this point before.Simply shifting the season to a later start date and end date does *not* work - at least this coming year. Next Summer is the Olympics, and there will be pre-Olympic qualifying events and such that will need to be televised. Having the NBA season encroach will not bode well.

You worked out all possible permutations of re-arranging the NBA calendar, for all 12 months and each day in that month and there was a clash? Dang you're a mathematical genious :o)

they still make money in the preseason and it is used for conditioning, plays and scemes etc too. Not the same as the NFL but still is needed..

September 8, 2011  09:37 AM ET

I hope they're ready to sacrifice the season too...

September 8, 2011  09:39 AM ET

They need to sacrifice about 20-30 games out of the season too! Too darn long of a season to begin with. No one really cares much anyway until the playoffs!!!

Time for some give and take, Bros?

They can sacrifice the entire season. Who would miss it?

Well, the European players will be game ready when the season starts even if the pre-season is locked out.

Missing pre-season games...

That would indeed be tragic.
