Cabrera's future with White Sox
If Orlando Cabrera really is sincere about wanting to get onto the free-agent market the White Sox might as well know that as soon as possible. It's possible that they could get Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo from Boston for Cabrera, or that they might get a rich package of prospects from the Cubs and let Juan Uribe play shortstop for another year. Or maybe Cabrera would snap up the offer they made to Kosuke Fukudome -- $50 million over four years. That wouldn't be a bad thing, either, as it would secure a position at which the Sox have few attractive internal options.

As a Red Sox fan, I hated the fact that we didn't try to resign Cabrera after the '04 Series. I would gladly give up Crisp and Lugo for him.

If I were the RedSox I would do this in a heartbeat. I would hate the fact that the Sox would be so much better, getting this guy back would be like erasing a mistake. It really sounds too good to be true.

The Whte Sox oughtta do something- like blow up and start over with a team of future stars and develop them. They don't stand a chance against Cleveland and Detroit. It's a race for 3rd place in the AL Central between the ChiSox, Royals, and Twinkees...

Definately do that deal...imagine what the ERA will be if teh shortstop actually helps REDUCE the number of runs scored!! He would be a perfect bridge untile Jed Lowerie was ready (he'll be just like Pedroia).

Letting Cabrera go was probably Theo's biggest mistake. Getting him back would solidify that position for the next 3-5 years and greatly improve the team BA.

The White Sox will be better this year, their BA couldn't get any worse. They may still be fighting for second or third place, but don't look for them to be as bad as they were last year.

We know the White Sox like Coco. I could see them agreeing to give up Cabrera for Coco and Lugo, if the Sox eat a little of Lugo's contract. I think this trade is very realistic. Of course, if the Sox trade Coco, that all but ends their pursuit of Santana, since Ellsbury will officially be untouchable.

Then the Yanks can play a little hard ball with Minnesota?

Exactly. I can't imagine the Sox making any move involving Coco until the Santana thing is settled.

Who is still out there on the FA market who could replace Melky in CF? I think the Yanks options are diminished as it is.

Seems like the Santana thing is settled, seemed like everyone was bluffing. I dont think the Sox should wait, especially if a deal like this pops up and the other deal is pretty stagnant for a few weeks. You dont want to end up losing out on both players.

I don't suppose the Sox would offer them Coco. :-o

The Yankees at least have Damon, I guess. But, yeah, most of the FA center fielders are gone.

Between Damon and Hideki, plus any unknowns, i believe they are looking at at least some DL time.

There's no rush for the Red Sox to trade for Cabrera. Worse case is that the Pale Hose trade him somewhere else, and in that case Lugo is the bridge to Lowrie. Otherwise wait and see what happens with Santana, and then persue Cabrera closer to when camp opens if they still have the necessary pieces.

It sure seems like the Yanks will not use Damon in center for the remainder of his contract except as a replacement in late innings or in an emergency start. So can they really even trade Melky without a permanent replacement? So are they out of the Santana deal if Melky is staying put?

Good question, Whalers.
With our Rowand or someone else as a fallback, it's really interesting to see how available Melky really is now.
