Cowboys' recent draft-day failures

09:22 AM ET 09.10 | Here's a quick quiz. The Cowboys have selected 27 players in the last three drafts. How many of those players are on the active roster? The same number as those who have been released. There are 13 players from the last three drafts on the active roster as the team prepares to open the regular season against the New York Jets. Another 13 have been released and one, second round pick Bruce Carter, opens the season on the non-football injury list. Now, how many of those picks will start on opening night? Two are certain - receiver Dez Bryant and left guard Bill Nagy. Tyron Smith will start if he's healthy and there's a chance Sean Lee will start at inside linebacker to bring the total to four. Still, that means that less than 15 percent have cracked the starting lineup. The last three drafts have not yielded the numbers every team needs to remain successful. But those misses have been minimized somewhat by the Cowboys success when it comes to rookie free agents.

That thread from last night was more interesting to read.

I think it's a problem with the GM. Oh wait.....

Look's like the Cowboys are waiting for someones cast offs to improve their roster.

The scout team has been pretty lame for the last 10 - 15 years. It's well past time to flush those clowns out.

September 10, 2011  10:11 AM ET

The failures of the Cowboys drafting anyone worth a damn are well chronicled.

Here's hoping Red Ball has input that changes this.

As much as hit pains me to say anything good about Dallas....if Tryon Smith stays healthy that boy is a stud. Still cant' belive the Eagles traded picks with Dallas a couple years ago and with that pick they took Anthony Spencer (one of the two best defensive players) who Philly will now have to deal with for 10 years.

September 10, 2011  10:37 AM ET

Whole lot of teams could have been the subject of this .

September 10, 2011  10:45 AM ET

At least the Cowboys generally don't break the bank on their draft busts.

When do we talk about football on these threads?

September 10, 2011  11:11 AM ET

Thats what happens when a non-football guy in JJ is your GM, President and general ruler of all...it delights me to see Dallas fall short of expectations

Thank you for noting this.

I suspect this is probably fairly close to the average curve. But TNR needs something to post and it said the word "Dallas", so it must be noteworthy.

Cowboys' recent draft-day failures

I'd be more concerned about their Sun-day failures.

Good thing they don't. Dez Bryant would've bought up all the Now&Laters in Texas by now.
