09:52 AM ET 09.11 | It is merely a tragic coincidence, figures Shawn Thornton, that three players who once shared part of his job description died this summer. "I think they're all different situations," Thornton said of Wade Belak, Rick Rypien, and Derek Boogaard. "Obviously a tragedy, each one of them. But I think they're completely different incidents. The only common denominator is that they all played hockey and had sort of the same role."

Tough to agree, tough to disagree. The guys who died definitely had issues and their style of play might have played a role. Too complex an issue to paint it black and white.

Another story beaten into the ground.

Fairly typical for an off-season weekend. Unfortunately, it only gets marginally better during the season.

I don't think anyone can say it any better than that.

There were some issues in common but there were some differences. It would be foolish for the League and the NHLPA to ignore the deaths.

We need more Leaf bashing posts. That would bring the troops around.

They used to say that about actors, they always died in threes.

...But it's only the good ones whose passing you notice. The bad ones just keep making bad movies for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever.

You listening, Kevin Costner? (You too, Keanu Reeves.)

William Shatner, so bad he makes you laugh.

Definitely the exception to the rule - He's become a self-parody.

I am leaning towards Thorton on this. Guys have been dropping their gloves since the first puck was dropped and the "designated enforcer" has been around for 40 plus years. These guys obviously had issues but playing the game they loved and role they had in it IMO had very very little to do with their final decisions. Thats the way my non-medical background sees it.

Atta boy, love that kind of talk. Not as much fun as it used to be though Most Leaf fans have finally figured it out that Burke and Wilson equals failure.

That's just a partial quote.

Thornton finished up by saying "ummm, what were we talking about, again?"

This almost begs the need for some sick effer to estabish a "dead pool", to speculate on the next player destined to shed the mortal coil...I know. Bad idea.

So, who's going to interview Riley Cote? George Parros? I hear Andrew Peters is available...

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use PennyJump.com

If their deaths are related to getting into a lot of fights, then wouldn't this same problem be happening in the MMA? A hockey fight lasts 30 seconds. An MMA match lasts much longer.

They don't fight every night in MMA and when their hands are broken or their knuckles mashed cause they punched a helmet instead of a head they aren't on the card. They still have to answer the bell 82 games over 6 months in hockey and if they don't they'll replace you with someone that will
