Penn State no longer elite

08:15 AM ET 09.12 | More than a few wonder whether one of the great college football towns, Happy Valley, is now a misnomer. The Penn State program no longer is an elite college football program. You know the popular slogan, right? "We are ... Penn State!" Perhaps it needs modified a bit to bring it up to date. "We are ... just another team!" It's not just the 27-11 licking that No. 3 Alabama put on the Nittany Lions before a white-out crowd of 107,846 Saturday. It's that Penn State is 1-13 against Top 5 opponents since its 12-0 season in 1994. It was outscored, on average, in those 13 losses, 30-12. Only three times was it within a touchdown at the end. That's not Penn State football. Well, actually, it is.

I have the utmost respect for JoePa but how many more years will he be coaching in Happy Valley?

if you are talking college athletics, penn state is top 10 football program as always..but when lumping them in with the pros...not fair comparison

Maybe Tenn and Penn State can play in the "we were relevant in the 90's bowl" this year.

I would say until he dies. Seems like many of the old powerhouses could fit this category. ND comes to mind....can't believe they are 0-2 with all that talent. Michigan comes to mind as well, but at least they have the RR excuse, and it looks like Hoke is going to bring in some top talent to turn that thing around. UM just doesn't have the horses right now to be competitive at the national level. Still not sure what PSU's problem is.

The Big 10, BIGTEN and now the B1G hasn't been real kind to JoePa. Imagine if he had took his knitting Lions to the Big lEast!

The Pittsburgh Gazette. Can someone from around there opine whether this is a Pittsburgh flavored paper since we know that is somewhat of a rivalry.

This could have been a 2005 article and it would have been just as correct. Even the year they went to the Rose Bowl they were absolutely outclassed by USC.

Lazy journalism. The Gazette "stole" this story and replaced Miami or Notre Dame (or Nebraska and Florida State in years past) with PSU.

It seems like, since the time JoePa ran off the field @ the 'shoe and came out with different trousers, none of the coaches or other teams have much fear of the shittany lions.

LOL

Cant you say this about the entire B1G?.... Then again Toledo is a powerhouse

You are a LSU fan right? If so let me get this straight, you are taking pot-shot's at OSU for playing MAC teams (Akron/Toledo) yet the Tigers played NW State and will play W. Kentucky later this year? Isn't that being just a little biased?

Probably should stay out of this one, but I think he was referring to how close the game was.

If you read the thread over the weekend... A pOSU fan said Toledo is a great team.. So now i have to add that statement when i postAnd yes we play 2 gimme games.. Its expectedBut I know you aint comparing OSUs schedule to LSU

Did I say I was comparing OSU's and LSU's schedule? Of course not. I just found your comment to be very hypocritical seeing as how LSU also plays a couple cupcakes.

Why should I stay outta this? I'm not stirring the pot, just trying to find out why LUS said what he said.
