Buzz on FSU suspensions

As many as 25 Florida State Seminoles have been ruled out for the contest, caught up in the latest wave of an athletic department probe into academic misconduct relating to online testing. Suspended players weren't named, in accordance with federal privacy laws. The Tallahassee Democrat reported 11 players with starting experience are affected. Buzz around FSU's bowl preparations indicates the defense will be hit hardest. Kenny Ingram, for example, is making a short-term move from free safety to strong-side linebacker. FSU officials began looking into academic misconduct last spring, centering on a former department tutor who provided athletes in several sports with answers to an online test.

Could this finally be the end of the road for the old man?

December 19, 2007  07:54 AM ET

I'm truly shocked about the outcome of this scandal. I just thought FSU (Free Shoes Univ.) was a stand-up program....I'm truly at awe at this situation! Where is Jim Harrick and his son when you need them. They could've just drawn up a design of a football field and then ask certain questions to help the students out like:

1) How many minutes in a quarter

2) Where did the legendary Knute Rockne coached for:
a) Nebraska
b) Northwestern
c) Notre Dame
d) NC State
e) None of the above

3) Which team doesn't belong in the SEC:
a) UCF
b) USF
c) FAU
d) FIU
e) None of the above

Honestly how can a FSU fan defend this type of nonsense!

December 19, 2007  08:21 AM ET

FSU is improving. Atleast the players aren't stealing from Dillards, robbing teammates, getting into fights with the cops. I see whay Bowden got a raise...

December 19, 2007  08:23 AM ET

You see whay?

Hmm.....

December 19, 2007  08:24 AM ET

Honestly you can't even justi(lie) I meant justify the way FSU is going down and it's tarnishing Bowden status each year.

December 19, 2007  08:27 AM ET

Cheating? Look before you act so surprise, know that most programs around the country have similar "problems". Except those "problems" are never made public...

December 19, 2007  08:30 AM ET

at what point do we actually start blaming the individuals directly involved in the cheating scandal? not saying that Bowden is totally without fault, but these kids are old enough to know better in my opinion. and i'm sure when he was recruiting them, they didn't say "oh by the way, once i get to school, i'm gonna become a discipline problem."
a sad day for the FSU athletic dept as a whole......i can definitely see Bowden retiring after next year.

December 19, 2007  08:31 AM ET

The American Dream, I dont think your school has given you the right to trash anybody. I know you are going to say that they are turning things around and this and that... but seriously keep the typing to yourself when it comes to athletes having problems in and out of school.

December 19, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Spelling error. FSU has been going down for years. And granted most students who take on-line classes do cheat, it doesn't make it right. The fact that they got caught makes it even worse. You would think Bowden would explain to these kids that they are under a microscope. They can't make the same mistakes the non student-athlete makes because their name will be thrown out to the public.

December 19, 2007  08:47 AM ET

Give FSU credit for cleaning up it's own problems and not covering them up. I recall a few years ago, while working as a law enforcement officer in Omaha, the great Nebraska Cornhuskers, under the the guidance of Tom Osborne, with over a dozen players accused of felonies, managing to get their court dates set after the season was over to allow the players to participate in the Orange Bowl. It wasn't put out publicly, but it happened...

December 19, 2007  09:03 AM ET

At least it wasn't felony arrests, the Big 10 has seen the lions share of those this year. Plus, as much as I like the Gators it seems more guys have been arrested in the last few years under Meyer than the entire time of Spurrier.

I mena if you want to discuss an old man that has lost his program, go look in Happy Valley.

December 19, 2007  09:08 AM ET

Just another example of a coach, and a University, putting wins over academics. When is this dinosaur retiring again?

December 19, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Looks like this could end up being Bowden's farewell year. I can't imagine any team going to a Bowl game down 25 players (11 starters) and making any type of a showing, let alone winning. FSU needs to clean up their act first as a school and then as a football team. Time to clean house overall period!

December 19, 2007  09:30 AM ET

Give me a break "see-dub" .... to imply that Paterno has not lost his program compared to Bowden is absured. Paterno plays in a tougher conference, has more wins over the past 4 years, fewer news worthy off field incidents and has a brighter future with their current player roster.

And one final note, if Penn State/Paterno had joined the ACC instead of the Big Ten, like FSU did, the race as to who has more college game victories between the old coaches wouldn't be close.

December 19, 2007  09:38 AM ET

They could send the FSU girl's field hockey team to the Music Bowl in their home bikini whites.

Who wouldn't tune in for some of that?

December 19, 2007  09:50 AM ET

ATLfan7, that would be realistic if this were two or three players, but when you've got 1/4th of your roster affected, that's a reflection on the program and its staff. Either the coaching staff knew about these issues and looked the other way, or if they didn't, then they should've been following the kids more closely. At least that's what the NCAA told the Sooners, and we only had two kids affected by the car dealer fake jobs scandal.

And the ice tree has a legitimate point, it's not necessarily about running a clean program (it could be argued that none of the big name programs is truly clean), it's about giving the impression of a clean program, and keeping problems under wraps.

December 19, 2007  09:52 AM ET

Cheating? Look before you act so surprise, know that most programs around the country have similar "problems". Except those "problems" are never made public...

the ice tree | 12/19/07

Couldn't agree more. anyone who thinks other athletes at almost all other schools don't "cheat" is naive. And not just for online testing. Much like fraternities, student athletes are often given hard copies of tests in advance. FSU just happened to get caught.

December 19, 2007  09:56 AM ET

Texed, I would!

December 19, 2007  10:01 AM ET

You see there? A man of refined tastes.

December 19, 2007  10:12 AM ET

Honestly do you really think Bobby Bowden, or any coach for that matter has control of students taking tests?? This will have nothing to do with him retiring. This same problem goes on at every school in the country. Think back to when you were in college, you never received answers to any test or at least any advanced information??? Please.
