Franchione interested in SMU job

SMU and former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione have been in contact regarding the school's open football coaching job, and Franchione has shown interest, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. If SMU hires Franchione, it would certainly add fire to the school's rivalry with TCU. Franchione helped turn around the long-struggling private school, going 25-10 from 1998 to 2000, before leaving for Alabama. He started TCU's ongoing streak of playing in nine bowl games in the last 10 seasons.

Maybe he can start a VIP page there too...

I'm guessing at this point Franchione is interested in ANY job.

This actually might not be a bad hire for SMU. He's a pretty decent football coach, especially for a smaller program (he did wonders for TCU). He obviously knows the area well and can recruit there. You gotta figure he's learned his lesson with the whole VIP page thing.

The only downside is that if he has success there, he jumps for greener pastures at his first opportunity. Of course, with what's happened in his past, greener pastures might not come along. That and SMU is a WEALTHY school, so if he turned that program around, SMU would be willing to fork over cash to keep him there.

We don't want the eye-tie anywhere near here any more.

Bring back the Pony Express

i think i'd prefer Larry Coker instead. not like i'm a booster, or season ticket holder, or student or alumnus..i'm not even a fan come to think of it. smu does have a nice museum.

Nooooo!! SMU doesn't want a ex-TCU anything, or a Big 12 washout...we've got the money. I say we just fork over EVERYTHING to bring in a huge name. I don't know how, but it can be done! Call Stoops and offer him $10m a year. We can afford it, and the coach along would bring in better talent.

That's right but Smu is his dream job what a piece. I wouldn't want Franchione coaching my arena team.

If I'm an SMU alum and I want a snake oil salesman, I'd bring back Ron Meyer.

December 19, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Ron Meyer? Now there's a name from the past!

December 19, 2007  12:33 PM ET

Nothing good can come from this.

I remember when Space Ace was a grad assistant at SMU...he left coincidentally right before the previously mentioned DEATH PENALTY sanctions...said something about giving new recruits brand spankin' new .45's? How NCAA just took all of the fun out of it?

December 19, 2007  01:55 PM ET

Did he announce his candidacy in a special newsletter for Franchione boosters?

December 19, 2007  02:30 PM ET

Space Ace? Naw..he prefers using ESP

Bobby Collins still works for me as my bag man.

December 19, 2007  03:13 PM ET

better than Boostie Collins

December 19, 2007  03:54 PM ET

Whatever SMU does, please do not hire Franchione!!

December 19, 2007  04:17 PM ET

SMU will only hire Franchione if it has a death wish. I don't want Coker either. In fact SMU shouldn't consider anyone from the BCS conferences because they will bolt after one good season. Hire someone successful (obviously an assistant coach from a successful staff) from C-USA or WAC because they will have a good idea about the conference and the team and will stay for a longer duration.

What happened to Phil Bennett?
