Unimpressed Belichick: Long way from being good

08:04 AM ET 09.13 | Leave it to Bill Belichick to throw cold water on a night in which his quarterback threw for 517 yards. [Belichick] didn't view the 38-24 win over the Dolphins on Monday Night Football as a masterpiece. Not a work of art. In fact, specifically not a work of art. "We certainly got a long way to go," Belichick said in the aftermath. "That was no Rembrandt performance but fortunately it was good enough." ... "I thought it was competitive tonight but there's still a lot of things we need to do better, that's obvious," Belichick said. "We gotta go back to work. It's the first game of the season, we got 15 more in the regular season. Hopefully we can improve on a weekly basis. We're a long way from being a good football team right now."

Good thing he's not coaching the Chiefs.

Great defense there.

Imagine what it would be like without Fat Albert.

Looked a bit rough!

Exactly. When is a win a loss for BB? When you let a bum like Henne throw for 400 yds.

And who said yesterday that "Brady was done"?

September 13, 2011  08:11 AM ET

At times, it looked like he was playing soft coverage and daring Henne to throw. It was almost like a pre-season game. Given the way the Pats moved the ball on offense, the Dark Lord knew he could experiment even if it cost him points.

Overall, though, it had the signature of Patriot teams from the Glory Years. They played pretty even in terms of scoring for the first half, took over the game in the third quarter and blew them out in the fourth. They did this by achieving dominance of the line both ways and just wearing the Fish down.

Heard he dressed, did he play?

Sparingly. He got a couple of tackles, no sacks. At one point he made Henne throw it away as he broke through dragging a double-team with him.

Ocho, on the other hand, saw limited action and only made one catch. But when you're running a two-tight-end offense and either one of them can go deep and stand head and shoulders over the defensive backs, wideouts just don't seem as important.

Old Man Branch looked great, and the 99 1/2 yard TD to Welker, the first play after the defense held on a first-and-goal from the one, made a statement.

By mid-season, we may have to find a new nickname for Fat Albert. I liked what I saw. Chad Henne didn't.

Yeah he played. Had a couple of tackles.

Or my beloved Steelers....

Ocho looks like a fish out of water with the Patriots. Or at least the mediocre receiver he is.

QUOTE(#13):

...how much of that came in the 3rd and 4th quarter when New England was in control and sitting back in zone coverage giving Miami all the 5-10 dink and dunks it wanted?

A lot, but they marched the opening drive right down the field and killed themselves a couple of times with holding calls.

The Pats had a lot of stupid penalties, too. Ocho lined up wrong and cost them big yards. A couple of motion calls, too. Not at all characteristic of the Pats.

Thank you Brady, Welker, & Hernandez(sleeper)!!!!!! I won BIG TIME because of you three!!!!

QUOTE(#19):

Ocho-stupido should hae been cut at the end of pre-season.

The Patriots have been a humbling experience for him to say the least.

The Dark Lord has a plan for Ocho. You watch. Somebody is going to figure out that they've got to double the tight ends, which will mean single coverage on the wideouts. They'll put their top guy on Branch, which will leave Ocho undermatched on the other side.

QUOTE(#20):

The defense showed some signs that it could be very good, but it's early and we'll have to wait.

They were really inconsistent, which is what made me think the Hoodie was trying stuff out as if it were pre-season.
