DiPietro: Cup will validate contract

08:31 AM ET 09.15 | Rick DiPietro's wife says the past three seasons have left her husband feeling alternately helpless, worthless and depressed, a time that unforunately coincides with the signing of a 15-year contract on Long Island. Like most huge contracts, it was hard for DiPietro to live up to the expectations. ... "The bigger the contract, the more pressure there is," DiPietro says now. "Throughout a long-term contract like that, there will be years when you're underpaid and there will be years when you're overpaid. That's just the commitment both sides make. Winning cures everything. The Stanley Cup and being successful here will definitely validate the contract."

Good luck with that.

the way the cap keeps growing in 2 years this will seem like a small contract....wait it out Ricky. On the bench yes , but wait it out

I feel better once the New York Post explains things. Very clear now.

"Rick DiPietro's wife says the past three seasons have left her husband feeling alternately helpless, worthless and depressed..."

She probably regrets signing that prenup....

When was DP underpaid?

Seriously Rick, the best thing you can do right now is shut your mouth, attempt to stay healthy and try to be a #1 goalie.

How about them Isles signing JT for 6 more years!!! 33M total. Not bad Garth.....not bad at all.

September 15, 2011  09:17 AM ET

I must admit the Isles made for great entertainment last season... especially the game that DiPietro has just come off IR skated out to center ice to fight, got hit once and went down like a sack of rocks.

September 15, 2011  09:17 AM ET

how much are the Isles still paying Yashin?

September 15, 2011  09:18 AM ET

Everything he said is true. He just can't stay healthy and that is the sad part. Heck there are a lot of other goaltenders who get paid more who aren't worth it either.

September 15, 2011  09:25 AM ET

He needs a change of scenary in the worst way. It's a shame he still has like 10 years left on that deal though. The NHL should really consider including contract restructuring, like the NFL has, in it's next CBA.

I'm not defending DP at all, but what the hell is he going to say? I take that quote as a tongue in cheek way of him admitting he got pummeled.

September 15, 2011  09:30 AM ET

LOL..this guys awesomely hilarious...sounds more delusional than Argos after a Laffs 4 game winning streak...this guy should just worry about not pulling his groin and tearing both ACL's on a routine save than winning the Cup.

September 15, 2011  09:34 AM ET

"So in short, my contract will never be worth it."

September 15, 2011  09:35 AM ET

**** dude. everyone is still waiting on your underpaid years to happen.

Word is they are going to announce his contract and him being the Captain today. Not sure how I feel about JT being the Captain yet. Face of the franchise, yes......
