08:36 AM ET 09.15 | Ted Leonsis has publicly shown a great deal of compassion for his players, both on the Caps and the Wizards. [Leonsis] has spent the past few weeks publicly supporting oft-criticized forward Alex Semin, but made no guarantees when asked about the long-term future of the 27-year-old Russian. Speaking on ESPN 980, Leonsis said he does not understand why Semin, whose work ethic has been questioned by former teammates, is viewed as such an unpopular player. Semin enters training camp on a one-year, $6.7 million contract. Last season, he played under a one-year, $6 million deal. "I don't know what his future holds," Leonsis said. "I'm hopeful that he comes in with focus like all of our players come in with focus."

Ted says the right things. But, I'm certain he knows full well why Alex get's criticized. And deservedly so. I think Alex's future in DC may be very short without more effort and heart. Can he do it? I have no idea but I'm not putting a lot of hope in it.

I think he can do it - he has the talent, and when he commits himself he is a great player, I think the highlight reels speak for themselves. But he also that dark side where he pouts, doesn't commit to play all 3 zones on every shift and can disappear completely.
But I think the Caps and Tampa Bay will both be fighting hard for the SE.

Preferably with a perennial non-playoff team. Perfect fit for him.

What team is going to give this guy a long term contract? The fight between him and Staal a couple years ago summarizes the amount of grit he's got goin on
