Beltran wants Reyes in Giants lineup

09:44 AM ET 09.17 | Can you imagine a top five in the Giants lineup of Jose Reyes, Freddy Sanchez, Carlos Beltran, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval? Sounds like a pipe dream, to be sure. It's hard to imagine the Giants finding the dough to sign one of Beltran or Reyes, much less both, but Beltran is making it known that he believes the Giants' top priority this offseason should be finding a leadoff hitter, and that might be a prerequisite for Beltran considering a long-term deal with the Giants. Beltran's report on Reyes is glowing. "He's a great guy," Beltran said. "A lot of people look at him playing around and jumping around and think he?'s not serious about the game. That guy works hard better than any person in baseball. He shows up and plays hard. He's an unbelievable player, a guy who makes a difference on a team, offensively, defensively, on the basepaths."

Beltran played how many games for the Giants?

September 17, 2011  10:05 AM ET

The Giants need to do something to spark some offense, but I would be worried about Reyes' durability.

Wouldn't you want Reyes over Beltran still?

September 17, 2011  10:08 AM ET

Gee thanks. Beltran giving advise to a team he isnt signed with for next year, about a guy that's injury prone. Unless they sign for nothing (which wont happen), the ycant sign both Beltran & Reyes and expect to keep Lincecum when his contract is up.

I'd still take him, but not for a large contract. Unless you throw in clauses like 40Sb or 150 games played, some sort of insurance against his legs.

Bilateral leg weakness!

If they sign them both which I doubt the Giants can afford to do, they also better stock up on stretchers and hire a few more doctors. Oh and they will both love the nice WARM weather out there...I've had both these stiffs for the last 6 years, neither one of them can stay on the field I wouldn;t give either one more than a one year deal with a second year option . Otherwise you will regret it. Reyes has popped that hamstring more times than a hookers g string...and Beltrans knees are shot....buyer beware...

September 17, 2011  10:37 AM ET

Oh and next he'll be looking for them to get Carlos Delgado out of retirement...

Reyes isn't a Boras client, so maybe whoever Peter Greenberg is, he would be able to convince Reyes to accept a contract that required him to get so many SB, HR etc. My guess is Reyes just wants a payday regardless of his being injury-prone.

And just yesterday word came out that the Giants were gonna be run more like a Corporation... Something about Home grown (not that kind of Home grown :-) talent and limited FA's...

Home grown talent is fine, but the Giants aren't a small market team, they can afford a high payroll. Prospects will take time, and the Giants window of opportunity is now, with the pitchers they have. They need to go out and acquire at least 2 big bats, Pujols or Fielder should be high on their list.

Imagine if they could land Fielder and CJ Wilson instead of Pujols, who would demand more money than either.

I think CJ Wilson is gonna be this years John Lackey. Not that I think he will suck as bad as Lackey, but the best pitcher out there in a real weak market. Somebody's gonna overpay to land this guy.

Agree that he will be overpaid. I think the Rangers will be the ones to do it too.

Don't count out the Yankees.

That goes without being said. Those clowns will overpay for used chewing tobacco.

So does Boston lately. I guess we'll have to wait and see how much money the Yanks have left after Sabathia is done taking them to the cleaners.

If only CC and the Yankees could both lose in those negotiations.
