Devils nervous about planes after Russian crash

10:05 AM ET 09.17 | In mourning lost friends, sorrow and sympathy for the Russian plane crash victims is the overwhelming emotion. But the tragedy now haunts NHLers' own travel, too. "I've had a fear of flying from the beginning, for no particular reason. It's something I don't enjoy," Patrik Elias said after reporting for Devils camp yesterday. "You always thought that you were safe. You don't read about sports teams having something happen to them. "This will be on our minds all the time. Even coming here on Monday, four days later, I was scared." On each of their 50-plus flights this season, they will think of last week's crash of the plane carrying KHL team Lokomotiv Jarolslavl. It claimed 44 lives, including former Devils Karel Rachunek and Alexander Vasyunov, former Flyer Brad McCrimmon, and ex-NHLers Pavol Demitra and Josef Vasicek. Travel plans to North America were changed, and Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk attended memorial services in the Czech Republic and Russia, respectively.

Unless Lulu's hired a Russian charter it's all good Pat.

And stop whining. I'm sure there's lots of guys riding the bus in the AHL that will swap places with you, ya jackwagon.

Does George Costanza now work in the Devils front office?

Nice. But Vanderbeek's more of a falafel guy rather than calzones.

I've been on Russian built airplanes when I worked in Cuba and I tell you, they are a little scary.

I knew the Devils are having financial problems but I didn't know it was so bad they make their team fly in Tupolevs.

Scary doesn't begin to describe it. All I know is if you didn't believe in God when you boarded one, you were praying like a saint by the time you got off. For good reason they are referred to as "flying coffins" throughout Europe.

It's just us, Yanks, that are not allowed to go to Cuba. Canucks have no such problems.

Hiring a Russian charter is Lulu's secret plan to get rid of the obscene Ilya Kovalchuck contract.

Quite aware; however, not many of us work there or fly on Russian planes. :-)

Is the basketball owner willing to let them fly free.

Or 60+ year old P51s flown by 80+ year old men. Tragic accident but waiting to happen.

We went on a twin prop from Havana to Holguin. I wouldn't take that memory back for nothing. Cubans are the nicest people I have ever met so it was all good too.

It's like that in all Communist countries, Thief. Nicest people. Maybe that's why those tugs enslave and abuse them like they do. Got to lay "nice" aside to put the boot to the arseholes at the top.

Likely a Antonov. Another gem in their collection.

No Roam....they are just geniune nice people who have nothing but share everything.

I don't care where the plane was built. I don't want to be on it.

And given a choice? I'd be on John Madden's bus.

After saying 80, the paper says 74 today. Is that too old to be trick flying over a crowd, or maybe the plane was defective.
