Is Garrard a good fit for 49ers?

10:07 AM ET 09.18 | David Garrard and the 49ers could end up a good match. And it's one the 49ers have given some thought to. The problem is how Garrard would fit in with the team while learning the offense. He could be viewed as a potential replacement for Alex Smith in the second half of the season if Smith falters. But in the meantime, he would take away valuable practice reps from Colin Kaepernick, and signing him likely would force the team to part with Scott Tolzien.

On April 29, 2011, The San Francisco 49ers traded up with the Denver Broncos from the thirteen pick in the second round (#45 overall) to select Colin Kaepernick in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Denver Broncos received picks 45, 108 and 141 overall in exchange for the 36th overall pick. He will be in competition with quarterback Alex Smith for the starting position.

He played for Nevada. Looks like the 49's gave up a butt load of picks for him.

And therefore... why the hell would they want to sign Garrard?
No point...

Does it really matter at this point? I'd rather see them throw Kaepernick to the wolves and decide one way or the other whether he has the chops to build a team around than to continue on the QB carousel.
The QB position has been a revolving door of inconsistency/inadequacy since Jeff Garcia bolted. A band-aid is not a suitable replacement for a tourniquet. It's time to get this fixed.

Garrard is an upgrade over Alex Smith, but SF missed out on a lot of those in free agency. It's a little late now.
