08:19 AM ET 09.20 | After tearing the meniscus in his left knee Saturday, Kerry Wood's season is over. He will remain with the Cubs and have surgery afterward to be ready for spring training. Wood, 34, who's finishing a one-year contract, said he wants to return to the Cubs. "I'm not going to play anywhere else, and this is where I want to be," Wood said. "If they need me back, I'll be back, and I'm sure those conversations will happen in the next couple of months. I'm home, and this is where I'm at. I've spent half my life here with the organization. This organization is family to me, and I get a chance to build a new relationship with the Ricketts family. I plan on being around. I'm raising my kids here."

Why does he love the team that ruined him so much?
He complained that his arm hurt not long after his 20K/0BB/1 hit game and the team told him to grow up and take the ball. A few weeks and horrible starts later, he needed arm surgery. What a bunch of morons.

Struck out 20, walked nobody, and gave up a single squib infield hit against a strong Astros offense (Bagwell, Biggio, Alou...they won the division that year). Kerry was so overpowering that day that it was almost ridiculous.
And then the Cubs forced him to pitch more than once after he said his arm hurt. They even went to the media and said he had to learn to pitch through pain, he was immature. Incredible. They get a talent like that and treat him like garbage???

As a lifelong Cub fan it wasn't the 20k game that did him in. It was Riggleman and Rusty Baker that pushed his innings totals too fast. See Mark Prior (re: Rusty Baker).
I am glad I finally got a few moments with him at this last Cubs convention to get his autograph. If he retires and gets a job with the Cubs that will be great. If he is able to pitch even better. He and his family have done a lot for the community.
Too bad a lot of other "athletes" can't show a little loyalty but those are the ones that run out of money a few years after retiring. They get what they deserve. Woody is going to get the best because he is a class act in a prima donna world.
Best of luck! Now bring Sandberg back.

I have no problem with him staying in Chicago. Pitching for the Cubs is another story. I'm a big Kerry Wood fan; it's just passed his time.

Kerry is a class act, he could play on my team anytime. I remember 98 like it were yesterday. He was absolutely awesome. This guy deserves to finish his career with the Cubs. They'll be bums again next year so what would it hurt to let Kerry go out in Wrigley like he should.

Or deep dish pizza.
Sign him cheap, he'll be a bargain again. Teach Marmol how to control his pitches.

He wouldn't want to pitch for a team whose fans get upset at failure. Better to be a loveable loser.

The real Chicago style is called stuffed pizza...you can get deep dish anywhere.
If you made a stuffed pizza with Italian beef, all beef kosher dogs, and three flavor popcorn, that would be as Chicago as you could get.

Wood should be gone from the Cubs like Dempster should. I can't wait to see who the next GM is. I hope he cleans house. Does any team want a hurt, washed up reliever or a .500 pitcher with an ERA of about 5 who makes $14 million a year?

There are a lot of fans who love Kerry Wood still, for the joy we got watching him pitch in 1998, the agony we went through with him in 1999, the specialness of Prior and Wood pre-Bartman, and the hope that he brought to our sad-sack Cubs. He grew up before our very eyes, and through it all, he loved Chicago back.
In today's sports world, Kerry Wood is a very rare creature, and he does deserve to retire as a Cub. He should never have been anything else, and in his heart, and the hearts of many of his fans, he never was anything else.
