08:23 AM ET 09.20 | While realignment talk lately has centered on the addition of teams to existing conferences, might there be a conference consolidation on the horizon? The Mountain West and Conference USA are again considering a football-only merger in response to conference realignment across the country, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson told the Idaho Statesman on Monday. "We've resurrected ... this consolidation concept with Conference USA from a football-only standpoint. The timing is right to be proactive in that," Thompson said. "Consolidation is, at least, worth exploring." ... Thompson has also reached out to members of the Big 12 and Big East about joining his 10-team league, if realignment leaves those schools without a home.

So might TCU

Yep.

Today brings a tear to my eye-two MWC articles....

If TCU stays in the fold and the MWC can add two of Baylor/ISU/Houston/SMU then in 2012 AQ status seems pretty certain.

I hope TCU was the only member of the BE he reached out to, BTW. WVU and USF are solid programs but the travel would be just silly.

The wintergreen ones are pretty good. Not a big peppermint fan though.

+1 - The non AQ schools that always whine could really seize a big opportunity here if they could combine the MWC and WAC in some fashion to create another AQ conf., same story for CUSA and Sunbelt.

The trouble for C-USA is that UCF, SMU, Houston, and Southern Miss are all poachable targets. If they can hold together and add Troy and maybe ArkSU (and perhaps even one or two BE castoffs) then they look pretty good.

To me, if this whole current structure breaks down, they really need a 1 to 2 year period where schools (like TCU) can back out and move to somewhere more geographically viable. I think this whole thing is driven by money but in the end, what drives a kid to go somewhere is the facilities, the gameday atmosphere and crowd. If the current state of realignment continues, the crowds (fans) are going to be left out. When you can't put butts in the seats (teams that travel well like Nebraska, mean big revenue for other schools) then programs and facilities can decline. Outside the realm of football, our volleyball team is probably the #2 draw for fans. We played Colorado State a few weeks ago, they paid us $10,000 to come and then 6-7 thousand fans paid $10 a head to get in and they (CSU) ended up banking about $60,000, that doesn't factor in the economic benefit Ft. Collins reaped as well. If geography is ignored for the sake of the TV dollar, I think in the end, some programs will suffer.
