Why Oct. 10 is so important

08:02 AM ET 09.22 | With camps set to open in early October, much is being made of importance of settling the labor dispute very soon. People simply won't tolerate it if billionaire owners and millionaire players can't reach a new labor deal in time for the start of the regular season to be saved. That's why the far more important deadline for the NBA looms a few weeks from now. That's when the league will have to determine whether the 2011-12 regular season will start on time. When would that deadline be? Probably in mid-October. On Oct. 13, 1998 ... the NBA announced the cancellation of the first two weeks of the 1998-99 regular season. So circle the following dates on next month's calendar: Oct. 10, Oct. 11, Oct. 12, Oct. 13, Oct. 14.

Seems like in general a much bigger deal was made about the NFL lockout. I think that played a key role in forcing the owners to actually negotiate. I'm worried that NBA owners aren't feeling enough pressure to get a deal done right now

I'll tell you why Oct. is so important.......it's because the Yankees are on another quest. Screw BB and the NBA. Hey all you sucker out there with your massive intelligence picking the Red Sox to win the AL and WS, I was right as usual the Yanks so shut up idiots and watch the Yanks shine Pals......

Baseball is a dead sport outside of the northeast. Mkl, welcome to Fannation and you are right that the owners aren't pressured to give into the demands in the NBA. In the NFL lockout, both sides were makin money so it was just a matter of splittin the pie. In the NBA, 23 out of 30 teams lost money last year. Forbes estimates the NBA lost over 300 million last year. The owners are already losing money, they have more to gain from a long lockout than lose. The longer the lockout goes on, the more leverage the owners have and the more the new CBA will favor them. The owners are brilliantly counting on the players greed to blind them from their true intentions. The sooner the players fold and make a deal, the better the deal will be for them.

Memo to Mr. Stern and the players:

The NBA is not the freakin' NFL! Fans will not return in droves if you screw with the season. Move your heads about three feet above where they are right now and smell the coffee.

The players have to understand that they are going to have to give back, and give back alot. There has to be sacrifices everywhere from ownership, to management, to player's salaries. When the players are willing to take a reasonable paycut on their monstrously overpaid salaries, we will have a season again. You are right though, the NBA isn't the NFL and the NBA will lose alot of fans over this.

The problem here is, the only place you will be getting money is from the star players, NOT HAPPENING!!! The players and small market owners know the only way out of this is revenue sharing local tv contracts.

Who cares? The NBA is lousy basketball officiated by corrupt officials and with the champion selected by David Stern depending on who he thinks will bring the best ratings.

FANS LOCKOUT THE NBA IF IT COMES BACK......NO ONE ATTEND GAMES UNTIL BEER PRICES DROP...ETC....

September 23, 2011  08:03 AM ET

If NBA shuts down, fans have pro football, college FB and foops, plus 2012 pro baseball, plus high school sports. No void here.

If NBA players decide to stand on principle (read "ego"), no one will notice or care. Go play for peanuts in Poland.

The NBA lockout will end in the same manner as the NFL lockout. Money is the issue here and its as adictive as that other money making product. The league won't risk the season or even a small portion of the season, every game not played is money that those greedy **** can't do without. This is the preliminary aspect of the sports lockout; made to entertain and make those that crave for sports want a little more. The owners and players are not hurting anyone except themselves by not having the season because it makes them unemployed and financially it hurts their pockets, and it's stupid if you really look at it to take money from yourself.
