Jet makes Stevenson case at Fernandez' expense

08:05 AM ET 09.22 | Jason Terry didn't so much criticize the acquisition of Rudy Fernandez, but if it means the end of DeShawn Stevenson's tenure, count the Jet out. Terry had little problem describing Stevenson's "it" factor during a rather impassioned plea to keep the massively tattooed one in a Mavs uniform. ... "He's one of the few guys in this league that has that and it's special, it's unique and I believe it's at premium. And, I think it's something that we have to have on our team going forward. Is Rudy Fernandez that type of player? Not that I know. He's more offensive-minded. Is he tough? Yeah, he's tough, but to guard Kobe [Bryant] and [Kevin] Durant and LeBron [James] and Dwyane Wade, you have to have a certain nastiness about you, and DeShawn Stevenson has that."

Jet is right on cue on this one but I believe the MAVS are going to re-sign Stevenson. Both will be on the roster next year. Nothing wrong w/ having so much depth.

he really was a factor. from knockin down some clutch 3's and guarding some of the best guards in the game. i mean im not making him out to be more than a role player but he really was a solid player.

Fernandez can't be an assett to a lot of teams. Unfortunately Dallas isn't one of them.

Herein lies the real issue. Instead of Terry worrying about Stevenson, he should be worried about himself.

Yes, keeping Stevenson makes more sense because he does make it harder defensively on the opponents best offensive two guard. However, you can't return with the same look and same strategy because you will become predictable. Notice the Lakers last season; very recognizable and the triangle offense had reached its expiration date. However, I don't expect Dallas to repeat because the team is not built to repeat or much win an NBA title; thanks to the Lakers fatigue factor last season.

Deshawn Stevenson is old and beaten up. Rudy Fernandez has a much higher ceiling. It's probably out of loyalty that the Jet is saying this. After all, they did win an NBA Title together. Unfortunately thereality is that Stevenson does not have many good years left. It may be time to cut him lose.
