09:48 AM ET 12.21 | Texas Tech coach Bob Knight isn't the only one barking orders from the Red Raiders' bench these days. Pat Knight, his son, continues to take more ownership of Tech's men's basketball team as his father inches closer to retirement. In September 2005, Tech athletic director Gerald Myers named Pat Knight head coach designate. Pat, 37, will receive a five-year contract to become Tech's head coach when his father retires. When that will be is anyone's guess. Well, except for Pat Knight and his father. Pat said a plan is in place for when his father will retire, leaving him in control of the program.

Is this like the Luke and Darth Vader thing???

December 21, 2007  12:40 PM ET

Knight just wins ball games and graduates his players.

December 21, 2007  02:08 PM ET

Knight's time is over!!

December 21, 2007  03:54 PM ET

Ah, the meritocracy that is college sports. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.

December 21, 2007  04:27 PM ET

Good night, Knight.

December 21, 2007  10:43 PM ET

Something about daddy's son waiting to take over that I just don't like. It's not a family business it's a tax payer supported school. (I think) Texas Tech is a public school, right??

December 22, 2007  03:32 AM ET

Actually, a son acting as an assistant coach for his father and then succeeding him is not unprecedented. Prime examples are Sean Sutton succeeding Eddie at Oklahoma State, Joey Meyer succeeded Ray at DePaul, John Thompson III succeeded John Thompson at Georgetown, and Keno Davis succeeding Tom at Drake.

At best, it gives the school the opportunity to evaluate the son as an assistant over a period of time before offering him the job. The school can be certain he???s the right man for the job and maintain some continuity in the system and coaching staff. It should also minimize losing recruits during the transition since they know who the new coach will be.

If the son is a good coach, then it actually makes a lot of sense.
IF???.

December 22, 2007  02:44 PM ET

Of course it's not unprecedented. I still don't like it.

December 22, 2007  02:46 PM ET

If the head coach position opens up, then "daddy's little boy" should be evaluated along with other potentials candidates. Yes, he probably has a leg up because the school knows all about him. But to flat out say, "when daddy is done, the job is yours" seems wrong to me.

December 22, 2007  10:07 PM ET

Anyone who says his son is the most qualified candidate for the job is not being honest....I would hope TT would look for the best available candidate.

December 22, 2007  11:11 PM ET

Knight is a dirtbag. Im so sick of people like Augustagolfer32 and Josiah defend this creep it makes just sick!! If TT wants to be good someday ship the whole Knight family out of town!! Get away from these creeps, they bring nothing to the table!! They cant coach, cant recruit, and Bobbys goofball antics overshadows the players!!!!!! TT if youre smart get rid of Bobby and dont let his son take over your program!!!

Knight physically assualted at at LEAST one kid at IU. Then got a job at TT. Now he has paved the road for his kid.....If they were black some would be screaming "affairmative action or race card". What should we call this "built-in affairmative action or simply the way it will always be in america"?

I have seen so many people talk about race and unqualified black getting opportunities they don't deserve. Even if that's true blacks still want get opportunities at the rate of whites, because whites wrote the laws and are still making the decisions in this country. That the way it is and will always be, period.

pwings,

And it still doesn't make it right. The ratio you just named is at a 3-1 clip. This same behavior goes on in the work force too. It's not right but that's the way it is. And it is what it is........

December 25, 2007  07:14 PM ET

Bob Knight has had his bad moments, that's for sure, but he's one of the game's greats. I find watching his teams at Indiana and TT refreshing as defense is played and screens are set, good shot selections are made, always hustle. To make derogatory, personal remarks about him is really a reflection of the soul and a sad commentary of those that get down to that level. Bob Knight has done good things for the game and for his universities. Indiana should be bringing him back and giving him the honor and accord that is his due.

NW Knight Fan,

I agree with you Knight's team always plays hard......But he has be a bullly to his players, peers, and bosses long enough. I ask you, if Neil Reed was your kid, would you still be a Knight support? He has to at some point be accountable for his actions. I still think he can coach but I also think he is a ticking bomb.

December 26, 2007  12:30 PM ET

This picture makes it look like Bobby's eye is working itself painfully out of his head.

December 26, 2007  01:42 PM ET

Knight was held accountable for his actions; he lost his job. And you're right, it was time for him to go, he'd become a little to big for his britches at IU, as they say. As for Neil Reed, I'd like to think my kid wasn't like him. Wasn't thought too well of his teammates either. I saw Kelvin Sampson thump Eric Gordon on the chest making his point during a time-out chewing out last Saturday. Something like that would have earned Knight a lot of media pedant-ness as was that Neil Reed video of the alleged choking.

I don't know how people can say bad things about him. He runs clean programs. His players graduate. What more can you ask for? I'd like my son play for him anyday
