08:04 AM ET 09.27 | Jim Irsay, while speaking at a Super Bowl-related event Monday, sent some panic through Colts nation when he reportedly said he didn't expect a Peyton Manning return this season. Irsay later clarified his remarks on Twitter: "I didn't say Peyton out 4season FOR SURE, keeping him on ActiveRoster n taking it month by month/Outside chance of return n December possible." Irsay's clarification came too late. The damage was done. It reignited speculation throughout football that Manning's injury remains far worse than the Colts are saying despite the team reiterating it expects Manning back this year. ... [The] larger the concerns grow that not only is Manning's 2011 season in jeopardy but his overall future, according to a medical expert consulted by CBSSports.com.

Neck.... Duh.

only guy that can triple his worth to a franchise during injury.....

I think most responsible franchises would have him on the IR by now.

But if Sony puts him on IR, he wouldn't be available for endorsements until January and would miss the lucrative holiday advertising season entirely.

Hey! Neck injuries are not something to mess with. Many a player have retired because of neck issues. I don't get it with the Colts but then again, when you've built a team on a house of cards....

Nice avatar. Any bets it will be gone by noon?

QUOTE(#10):

The problem is most likely Peyton. I'm sure he has expressed wanting to play as soon as he's ready, even if it's week 17 and they have nothing to play for.

And they won't have anything to play for.

It's sounding more and more nobody can say what happens if Manning tries to come back and play. Michael Irving and Sterling Sharpe both had to retire because of what might happen if they played again, not because of what had already happened.

It also sounds like nobody wants to take that final step and officially admit how bad things are. Irsay has come close a couple times, but somebody keeps pulling him back from the ledge.

Moose Johnston ultimately retired for neck problems

I think you're right. And there's no way they will let him retire before season ticket sales cutoff next year.

The guy is the franchise. I hate to see him end his career on an injury, but I'd hate it even more to see him spend his life in a wheelchair.

Yeah, they should hire Andy Reid to help with their Red Zone issues.

I said the same thing right before they blocked that one before half time.

I just don't understand why they KEPT trying to feed the ball to Cooley man.... Why go away from the guys who've won the games thus far?
