08:19 AM ET 09.27 | Any similarities you see between Barry Alvarez's Wisconsin program and Nebraska are by design. "The foundation of my beliefs comes from what I learned at Nebraska," said the former Husker linebacker under Bob Devaney. ... What Alvarez found at Wisconsin when hired as football coach in 1990 was similar to Devaney's discovery of disarray in Lincoln. The Badgers had played in bowl games only three times in 28 years. And there was more. "The athletic department was bankrupt ($2.1 million in debt) and flat on its back," he said. "There was a lot of unrest in the department. It was a very tenuous time." Alvarez said he and Wisconsin A.D. Pat Richter quickly agreed that the best way to solidify the department for the long term was to play winning football.
