Bowden backers slow WVU search

All was quiet yesterday on the West Virginia front. Doc Holliday, the Florida assistant head coach with a long history as a Mountaineers assistant and player, remained the leading candidate to replace Rich Rodriguez, who left Sunday for Michigan. Yet West Virginia administrators seemed to hit the brakes on a speedy search after interviewing at least four prospects in a couple of days: Holliday, former Auburn coach Terry Bowden, Florida State assistant head coach Rick Trickett and Central Michigan first-year coach Butch Jones. Part of the reason for the apparent slowdown was the phone-in and e-mail support for Bowden, son of former Mountaineers coach and Florida State legend Bobby Bowden.

Listen to those fans on this one: Hire Terry Bowden! It would be great to see him coaching again.

No way, been out of it for too long. Maybe if he brings with him an offensive coordinator that runs the spread.

I agree, 1970, ten years is FOREVER. Maybe, like you said, if he brings some talent to run the show for him, but in that case why hire him in the first place...

What's the rush?? The school should take their time and make the right decision based on the interviews and the history behind each.. Not listen to a bunch of fans who have a heart-felt favorite.

I said it earlier and i'll say it again: HIRE BUTCH JONES!!!

December 21, 2007  01:41 PM ET

Though I think he is a good coach, I don't understand why Butch Jones would be the best choice here (other than the obvious program connection). I think WVU would want someone who is going to pretty much finish up their career there given the recent events. Butch Jones would be too likely to be the next guy to coach 4-6 years there, prove he can lead/coach the program, and then leave for greener grass in a big time program. I think this is why Bowden has gotten as much momentum on this position as he has. It sounds nice to everyone who feels scorned in WV.

I can't remember exactly but... Didn't Bowden leave Auburn over some sexual harrassment charges or something???

What has Butch Jones proven? He can lose to a IAA team at home by 30 with a conference championship team. Does WVU really want to be the next Michigan (ranked losing to a IAA team).

Jones had a DECENT, and only that season with CMU. I can't call a season in which they got blown out by a IAA team more than decent. He has proven nothing as a head coach.

Also, he has only a small connection to WVU (2 or 3 seasons). He is from Michigan, played in Michigan and I think will stay in Michigan for the foreseeable future (CMU).

I would like to change gears a little bit. I am 57 years old, a college football fan for many years.I would like to know if any of you are like me. SICK AND TIRED of all of these COLLEGE PLAYERS getting into trouble. You name it these BIG CHILDREN get in and out of trouble every day. Look at how many are not going to play in their bowl games for one reason or another. You coaches and others that are suppose to be in charge need to do a BETTER job, with theses SPOILED CHILDREN. Brian Kelly would make a great coach for WV.

No Bowden. Holliday or Jones. Bowden will squander the program Rodriguez built.

December 27, 2007  01:18 PM ET

Bowden will squander the program? Are you forgetting that he ran the table in the SEC for 2 straight years?

December 28, 2007  10:42 AM ET

Bowden ran the table with someone else's recruits. Look what happened when he got his own recruits in there--he quit before he got fired! I personally favor Doc Holliday. Runs the spread, phenomenal recruiter, and he WON'T LEAVE!
