08:12 AM ET 09.28 | Can the Mets win in the case of Jose Reyes? The only thing more dangerous for the Mets than not signing [Reyes] is signing him. Or vice versa. Well, you see the dilemma. The Mets face their biggest decision of this offseason -- and maybe for years to come -- and there is no right answer and a pretty good chance of two wrong ones. The likelihood for regret either way is rather strong. Reyes is in a Mets uniform [Wednesday] for the final time in 2011. ... [You] know what the emotions of the fan base will be when it is announced this winter that he is a Giant or National or (fill in the blank): This is about the Wilpons being cheap, the Mets not being capable of keeping even the best of their own.

Tough call -- Reyes has been a GREAT player ON OCCASION ... he's pretty dang fragile. You invest $100 million in a guy and leave holes in your rotation and you're looking at middle of the pack standings for another decade... even IF he stays healthy!

Yes there is some risk in signing Reyes long term. But if the Mets dont, they might as well go into rebuilding right now.
If they can sign him to a 5 year deal, then I'd say do it. But if he wants a longer contract, which is likely, then walk. He's only worth as much as his legs & if he cant stay healthy he's not worth $100M.

I'd only sign him with performance and playing time clauses. This guy is too much of an injury liability to sign him for big money.

I doubt Jose will remain in New York..This damage to SS Wilpon, has resulted in off loading ALL excess weight. They will only sign him if they're able to snag another starry-eyed investor.
Finding a team willing to take on this much risk, will also be a huge challenge.

There is precedent. The Iggles did sign Vick. Arguably a riskier investment, albeit NFL contracts aren't guaranteed.

He is in the race for a bating title and people sit here and talk about risk...he is getting a big contract regardless of where he goes because...he is worth the risk. even if he falters somewhere...players are human, it is part of signing a player. The FA that he is deserves some good money. Mets should pay.

MILK ME!!!! The Mets already know they can't afford him. But to save face, they will "put their best offer on the table" until, knowingly, somebody else swamps it. Then they'll tell the fan base "we gave him our best offer, but Jose wanted more". But we know the truth already. They have no intention of keeping Jose.
As a fan, I'm getting cooler with that, but ONLY if that 100 million "offer" turns into two or three front line pitchers. Who, I dont know, but with that kind of jing, there must be two or three players out there who can make a difference in on-field and clubhouse leadership.
The Mets need a jolt, no doubt. Signing Jose is not the answer, but don't make us look like fools with a lame attempt to do what's right in the best interest of the team.

Reyes showed what a beach he really is by getting a hit in his firs AB today then asking to be benched to protect his lead for the batting title. To the next team that signs him, beware of his gutlessness ...

Guy had one really good year...he'll get his millions and turn back into a mediocre player!!! Way to bush league it with the one at bat to save your batting title...Should have done it the Ted Williams way and played the whole game. A true batting champion would have had confidence in his ablility to get more hits....

Reyes is a classless act who routinely demonstrates that he believes he is more important than the team. In my neighborhood, he would have been taken behind the woodshed a long time ago.

The Mets have had a losing record with him for the last two years, let him walk. He is too much of an injury risk long-term.
