Roster may sink Sharks plans

08:26 AM ET 09.29 | Todd McLellan promises an attention to jumping quickly out of the gate this season. The Sharks must jump out and win often. Just one catch, though: McLellan's roster makeup, at least on paper, will actually make a fast start more difficult than it was a year ago. And it could end up wearing out the Sharks' top players early on, anyway. ... If McLellan wants to go all-out through October and November, he will surely have to give the top two lines more ice time than usual, to make certain the Sharks are ahead on the scoreboard often and regularly. Right? Wrong, McLellan said the other day. "Whenever we've gotten off to fast starts, it's by using four lines," McLellan said. "And it has to happen again." But can it?

Maybe if they didn't concentrate on October and November; April, May, and June would be a lot more productive.

Shark bites are most common in the Fall months. Come Summer, they're all shark fin soup.

Glad to see a Sharks mention. I had forgotten they were still in the League.

Gotta have four good lines to pull it off though.

Nah, 2 scoring lines and a checking line. That's all you really need. The other three forwards you just sub in your other lines to rest guys or on a situation basis depending on face-off location etc. Most teams realistically don't have the depth for a defensively responsible 4 line rotation.

They're near sighted, Canuck. Can't see that far down the road.

Mark Purdy only chimes in occasional articles on the Sharks. He shows how much he pays attention when he talks about last years 4th line for the Sharks who were ineffective and disappeared in the playoffs. The big problems for the Sharks last year were Boyle playing too many minutes during the season (led the NHL in minutes played) and Thornton and Marleau having to burn too many minutes on the penalty kill. Both of those issues have been addressed.

Never gonna win with No-Show-Joe in their line-up....see Bruins, Boston.......a mere 5 seasons later Boston won after he was exiled.
