Sources: UCLA job was Bellotti's

Sources said Oregon coach Mike Bellotti needed only to say "yes" to have the job, but instead gave UCLA the same answer he gave USC in 2001. In a statement Friday Bellotti said, "I was approached by them on several occasions and finally agreed to allow them to come to Eugene and speak with me." Then he said no. "I have been, and continue to be, 100% committed to the University of Oregon and our pursuit of a national championship," he said in a statement.

Wowsers!
A college coach who says he is committed to a school--and apparently means it!

December 22, 2007  10:30 AM ET

Why would Bellotti leave. Oregon has the best facilities in the nation. Eugene is just a great place, period. The town is great, the weather is wonderful. The University and fans are committed to winning and do not have unreasonable expectations or overinflated opinions of the team like they do in Ann Arbor or Lincoln. Good job coach, I hope you get Tyrell Prior to commit and take the next step.

I'd stay with Nike too

December 22, 2007  11:40 AM ET

Why did the UCLA coach get fired and not Charlie Weiss? UCLA is going to a bowl game that they will win. Does Dorrel get to coach the bowl game? I

December 22, 2007  11:55 AM ET

Because they can't afford Charlie's buyout and they'll give him at least three years before they axe him for somebody better.

December 22, 2007  12:12 PM ET

UCLA's facilities are just as good as Oregon, it has a better weather, bigger commercial market and is sorrounded by the biggest talent pool in the nation. Expectations are not big, but it does have the most successful overall athletic department in the nation I am glad Bellotti is staying, is good to see coaches finishing what they started. But Oregon might never get any closer to an NCAA championship than it already has/

December 22, 2007  12:25 PM ET

SoonerGirl... this WAS Charlie Weis' third season... remember the Brady Quinn years?

December 22, 2007  12:28 PM ET

Bellotti knew that, with Phil Knight just donating $100 million to the Duck Athletic Endowment, further renovations to Autzen in discussion, and the University actively spending all across the athletic board (new baseball team, plans to replace MacArthur Court...) that he was in better shape remaining the highest-paid state employee in Oregon than heading down to Los Angeles where he would face longtime nemesis Pete Carroll locally...

Glad to see you stay in the fold, Bellotti... but I wish his moustache had stayed, too... just watched footage of 2000 Holiday Bowl when Oregon beat Texas 35-30... that 'stache was PHENOMENAL!!!

December 22, 2007  12:48 PM ET

Bigalke, I try to ignore ND as much as possible.
Would you believe I meant three *more* years?? Yeah, I wouldn't either...

Who's that on the bike?

December 22, 2007  02:37 PM ET

LA is the cesspool of the west. Staying in Eugene is a no-brainer unless of course a job in the Bay Area were to open, then downgrading the facilities would be acceptable, and the Bay Area has the best weather in the nation.

December 22, 2007  05:34 PM ET

The facilities at UCLA are second class compared to Eugene. Phil Knight has ensured that UO will be the gem of the PAC 10 for years to come. Most of the players on UO are from cali anyway.

There is absolutely no way that you leave Eugene, any more than you leave Baton Rouge for Ann Arbor. Both of those programs are in the gutter and have been for many years. Lucky PAC 10 fans at least have up and coming teams in their conference to be excited about. You can't say that about the Big 10.5

December 22, 2007  05:36 PM ET

It is so refreshing to see a conversation about college football that does not have any reference to that conference in the south.

You know, the diva coach conference.

December 22, 2007  05:37 PM ET

Of course, maybe UO could have impartial officials when they are at home.

December 22, 2007  05:51 PM ET

i'm going to blockbuster to rent "without limits" now.

i'd like to see oregon get to a bcs bowl, in fact i seriously wanted it to be
OU-UO this year. that would have been grand. too bad our qb's got injured and things took a turn.
is dixon returning next year? if not, those are pretty big Nikes to fill.

December 22, 2007  11:13 PM ET

Dorrel should not have been fired. Didn't UCLA have a decent season? They went to a bowl game. They won many conference match-ups. Something fishy is going on here. I wonder what it could be?

December 23, 2007  12:06 AM ET

Mas, somebody said DD is a senior and gone next year.

Amazing end to the UCLA bowl game...WOW!

December 23, 2007  04:27 AM ET

SG...I bet a lot of fans of both teams can't believe how the UCLA ended!
hope DD doesn't have the Jason White syndrome in his knees and gets to play on Sundays.

December 23, 2007  04:55 PM ET

ucla's facilites are not close to Oregons, and neither is the football program

December 23, 2007  04:56 PM ET

ucla's version of a good season = 6-7

December 23, 2007  05:43 PM ET

Why would Bellotti leave.

INCSOC | 12/22/07

Why indeed, since he's got a good thing going in Eugene. However, to think that he wouldn't leave is daft. UCLA is a complete mess and nobody but a Neuheisel would be attracted to it.
