Will Ovechkin sign with Canadiens?

Does Alex Ovechkin like Montreal? Very much. He has never hesitated to say so. His best hockey buddy is Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov; last time the Habs were in Washington, reporters wanting to talk with Ovechkin had to wait half an hour while Ovechkin and Markov chatted on the ice. Ovechkin will be a restricted free agent after this season. This year, he's earning a mere $1.3 million and the Capitals thought they could sign him for something similar to Sidney Crosby's contract, which works out to $8.7 million a year for five years. But Ovechkin fired Don Meehan and turned his affairs over to a lawyer, with everything guided by his mother, Tatiana. Tatiana is apparently thinking something more in the $9-million to $10-million range.

Don't tease Hab fans like this!

December 22, 2007  10:03 AM ET

With the salary cap how the hell can you pay someone $9-10 mil?

December 22, 2007  12:18 PM ET

the cap rules say one player can only make up to 20% of the cap space, averaged over the whole of the contract. If you look, Gomez is making 10 mil this year, but his cap hit is 7.37 for the whole of his contract.

Crosby took a slight pay cut to afford the pens the opportunity to resign their talent like Malkin and Staal.

The Caps are going nowhere..., wouldn't be surprised if the Caps tried to deal this guy before the free agency period started. His mother is now his agent..., that sounds kind of familiar to me....?

December 22, 2007  12:30 PM ET

I would weep crocodile tears of JOY if Ovechkin became a Hab... I doubt that Gainey would pull the trigger on that -- or that Gillett would cut as big a check as would be needed to haul in the Russian... but, boy oh boy, how great would that be to rejuvenate Quebecois hockey?!

December 22, 2007  12:32 PM ET

The Habs will make room by getting rid of Koivu, Ryder, and one of their goalies (Huet?) and not resigning Briiesbois (although he's not getting paid a lot). This gives me hope. Thanks david.

hell end up in bleu et blanc... but no rouge.. hes a leaf in waiting..

December 22, 2007  02:03 PM ET

there's is no way the Caps could afford to lose OV. they would lose all fan support, plus after Olie leaves they won't have anyone to build their team around (I guess you could argue Semin or Backstrom, but they are yet ot prove themselves). Caps will do anything to keep Ovechkin

December 22, 2007  05:22 PM ET

Unlike Tatiana, Bonnie Lindros was not KGB...

As for Ovechkin, if he chooses the tradition of Montreal, he could very well end up with a Stanley Cup, nothing less, something not likely to happen in a "bleu & blanc" uniform such as the Leafs wear.

Anyway, with three days until Christmas, it makes for a nice story for all these little Canadiens fans, and their bigger ones too...

Happy Holidays to all of you,

Shwingggggggg

December 22, 2007  05:28 PM ET

Yes, even to Maple Leafs fans...

December 22, 2007  06:58 PM ET

When Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette writes a story (and he dreamed up this one kiddies) he often gets his name right, and usually nothing else. Don't be buying those rouge, blanc et bleu sweaters with OV on the back just yet mes amis.

dont the habs win a stanly cup every decade? i wouldnt be suprised if they won one soon, with this guy

December 22, 2007  08:46 PM ET

LOL . . . . Please don't tease the fans of MONTREAL like this , you have to understand the religion of hockey over there . Aside from that , it'll be talked about @ every possible angle imaginable , however I believe AO would enjoy a pressure cooker like Montreal

December 22, 2007  10:21 PM ET

I've spoken with McPhee myself, he's from my hometown and a good friend of my family. He nearly choked on his "beverage" when I asked him if there was any truth to this. He will do everything in his power to keep AO in Washington. If he manages to let him get away, I'd say start looking for a new job George! God, he'd look good in a Habs jersey! We'd have a Maurice Richard trohpy winner on the front end and a Vezina trophy winner at the rear, after they get rid of Huet. I could see Huet, Ryder, Boullion, and Latendresse heading to the Caps. I like all of these guys but the pot has to be very sweet to lure AO out of Washington. Throw in a high and medium to low draft pick and the deal's done. Where do I sign?
All things aside, I think he'll stay in Washington. They cannot afford NOT to give him whatever he wants. Let him board at the White House for God's sake!
I'll ask Santa to bring me OV ONE for Christmas!
Cheers!4fORREVER!

Just like Richards and Lecavalier were going there too, believe it when I see it and I highly doubt i will see it.

December 23, 2007  05:53 PM ET

No way he will be a Cap next year.

December 24, 2007  01:35 AM ET

FIrst, if he's really wants more money he's not going to Canada because of the tax issues. What good would it do to make more if you don't get it. The move that would probably be best for everyone is to Chicago. Plenty of cap room, McPhee could save some face by getting an exciting offensive player like Havlat in return, plus 2 or 3 quality prospects, and maybe a draft pick. WIth their 2 best players locked in at the minimum for the next 2 years, and a bunch of quality prospects, and a young lineup overall theyre in perfect position to pull a deal like this. Especially now that all their games are gonna be on T.V. The ownership has turned a 180 in the past couple months and is dedicated to reviving hockey in the 2nd largest cold weather market in the country. Not only would this be good for him with endorsements etc., it would elevate the Hawks to a SERIOUS contender for the cup, and that would be great for the league as a whole.

December 24, 2007  02:41 PM ET

I wish they would take that picture off the site. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to change that red Caps shirt into a "home" Habs jersey. Actually, if you squint real hard... Alas, too valuable a commodity for ANY franchise to part with. This article is f'in with my psyche!
Cheers!

Well, somebody better tell TATANIA , he'd BETTER start performing NOW if he expects a 9Million +contract. Currently Crosby is the MAN NOT AO.
Ovechik is stinking up the place this year.

One year WONDER perhaps?

GO SKINS KILL **** ROMO. (I hope he plays ALL ENTIRE GAME Sunday)
I'll be there.
