Sabathia's performance should give Yankees pause

08:13 AM ET 10.04 | Though the Monday night strike zone provided some cover, CC Sabathia's offseason, depending on when it begins, bears watching. It would be foolish to suggest [Sabathia], who was outpitched by Justin Verlander in the biggest game of the Yankees' season, was pitching for his opt-out clause Monday night. Win or lose, weight gain or not, opting out was always going to happen. Come November, Sabathia is going to want more and then the Yankees are going to be faced with the $120 million question: Are we really prepared to saddle ourselves with another A-Rod contract? If nothing else, Sabathia's performance Monday night ... has to at least have given the Yankee brass pause for thought when it comes to extending the big guy for more years and a lot more money.

Really came in handy on that bunt play by Kelly, huh?
This guy is a heckuva pitcher, but you've got to think that he's either at or near the apex of his career arc. I'm not sure that giving him an overly lucrative contract is the best idea at this point. But then again, it's the Yankees and money doesn't matter.

The Sox a rather large payroll as well, and couldn't even get into the postseason.

How can you even tell if this guy gains weight?
He'd need a black hole to help him trim down, and physicists would be astounded when he managed to fill it up.

Imagine the black hole needed if you added Joba and Colon into the mix...

Yeah, that's pretty bad. Still, I wouldn't say it's as bad as having a $130m or so payroll and losing 85 games and finishing 4th in their division though.

I get a kick out of Mets fans. They never stop for a second to think about if they should be throwing stones around despite the glass stadium their team plays in.

Yes. The only fan base that I still see continually whining about payrolls. Of course, the irony being that they spend like the Yankees of the NL, it's just that they suck at everything they do, so it doesn't help.

If AJ pitches like do-do, Aretha Franklin will be singing in Detroit. Yankees need to bring in Hughes to see if he has anything left in the tank. AJ worries me, he's a head case. Maybe he'll shine in Motown.

Its happened to them before. Hell, I head a story the other day about a team that that added two players this year who go over 100 million and didn't even make the playoffs! Can you believe that????

Stephen Hawking has shown that the Milky Way's center of mass suddenly shifted to NYC in the past year for unknown reasons.
He also said that HE could have gotten a hit off CC last night, probably for extra bases.

Sounds like both AJ and Porcello have very short leashes tonight...both managers have indicated that if they struggle they will not hesitate to give them the early hook.

I think he's still one of the top five starting pitchers in the game.
Also, it's not just the Yankees that would be willing to give him more money. I bet there's at least a handful of teams that would be willing to extend him a year or two. Hell, given the state of their pitching, the Red Sox might throw a bid on him.
