Manny's unclear future in Boston

The player who will potentially headline the Red Sox drama is Manny Ramirez, staring at a club option of $20 million for each of the two years after 2008. Once thought to be a destination not to be concerned with because of the Red Sox' front office's previous run-ins with the left fielder, the notion of Ramirez sticking around for a ninth year could be a plausible scenario.

Oh boy. I guess now that the "Santana Trade Rumor" stories are getting stale, they will be replaced with the "What is Manny's Future" stories.

December 23, 2007  08:48 AM ET

Manny is Mr. Red Sox. He is what they are all about. They were made for each other...When you think of the Red Sox, you think of guys like him..

Tough day in the headline department at Fannation, huh? Must be like the SNL writers' meeting, where people just toss out ideas until a few things stick...

"Will Parcells' substantial surface area make him a higher skin cancer risk in Miami sun?"

"Is TO's foot too swollen to fit in his mouth?"

"Steroids taint Torre's record?"

Oops, sorry...they actually asked that last one.

Funny.....good chuckle from the TO comment....

How many times have we seen these types of headlines before? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

December 23, 2007  11:56 AM ET

I hope the giants get him!! :D

December 23, 2007  11:59 AM ET

I think this is something I can worry about NEXT YEAR!

December 23, 2007  12:00 PM ET

Same story, different year

December 23, 2007  12:13 PM ET

no, different story, because Manny really, really loves Boston now ;)

December 23, 2007  12:17 PM ET

Damn weekends are boring on FN. Good thing there's Celts, B's, Pat's and a fridge full of beer today! Cheers!

December 23, 2007  12:29 PM ET

RSB, Manny does NOT love Boston, no one of color does. It's one of the most racist cities in the U.S. I lived in Dedham for three years and worked in the Back Bay area, and did I celebrate when I left.

Boston is a nice place, if you're white. I see Manny's point, as well as Bill Russell's.

December 23, 2007  12:32 PM ET

dear lord, when did you leave 1942? I'm sure any issue could be turned racial. But I'm not biting and I won't discuss it with you!!! Buh Byes.

December 23, 2007  12:34 PM ET

Oh, but before I go, thank you for being the spokesperson on this site who knows how Manny and everyone of color feels. You've enlightend me so. Happy Holiday to you!

December 23, 2007  12:54 PM ET

I've got to agree with RSB on this one. The notion that Boston is "one of the most racist cities in the U.S." is pretty outdated.

December 23, 2007  12:55 PM ET

Yeah, I lived in Boston proper, about three-quarters of a mile from Fenway, and I certainly didn't notice it being an overtly racist city.

December 23, 2007  02:58 PM ET

Just because Barry Bonds says it is a racist city, doesn't make it so....as a Yankees fan....yes of course...please let Manny go:)

December 23, 2007  03:24 PM ET

I would LOVE to hear some specific examples of overt racism from Juice Boy's time living in Boston.

December 23, 2007  04:12 PM ET

He doesn't have any, Hyper. The Boston=Racism thing is an old story, inspired by an ugly and equally old photo. I lived in Boston and surrounding areas for 18 years. Didn't have a lot of problems. And that was 10 years ago.

Manny wasn't Manny this year, so the always mucky Herald needs to get it out of their systems before the end of 2007. A non-story.
