Why Glavine signed with Braves

The one-year, $8 million contract Tom Glavine signed with the Braves last month was $5 million less than the Mets' offer. It was a financial sacrifice Glavine was glad to make. He felt his kids had been making too many sacrifices for him, missing Little League games and birthday parties.

I respect Tom Glavine for making the decision.. especially if it was for the benefit of his kids... He's had a great career. As a Mets fan, I'm not unhappy that he has left.. It gives us an opportunity to bring in some younger talent at the SP position. I will miss his leadership though

I don't think that it ever looked right to see Tom playing for the Mets, and by his attempts every season to get back to Atlanta I think he felt the same way. They should have never let him go, but it is nice to see him back home

December 23, 2007  11:15 AM ET

Honestly, the Mets never even wanted him back.

December 23, 2007  11:19 AM ET

and this is NEWS because ...? millions of dads make sacrifices every single day in order to spend time with their kids and they're not earning 8mil and playing baseball ... they have real jobs, boring jobs, long-hour jobs .. no chauffeurs and clubhouse servants ... I respect Glavine, but this hardly a 'great' story ... why didn't those parenting issues concern him before this?

dont think the mets really wanted to keep him, well take him in the ATL though, need all the pitching we can get.hopefully hell mentor the younger pitchers.welcome home tommy.

Bye Bye Tommy!!! Dont wanna hear the family excuse.. thats BS!!! Hes home all winter , and travels all summer.Doesnt matter if hes playing in NY or Atlanta cuz they travel half the season anyways(unless your name is Juice Head Clemens). He made his money in NY now he could go back to Atlanta and pull a choke job there!! He was probally still on the Atlanta payroll while he was still playing in NY. Just look at the stellar performances he had against the Braves while in a Mets uniform..You BUM!!! Good riddens!!!!

Thomas Micheal Glavine in a Muts uniform? UGH! Thank God he's back home!

December 23, 2007  03:11 PM ET

Good riddance.

if he doesn't have a no trade clause in his contract $20 says he gets shipped out at the trade deadline to a contender looking to make a push in july

December 23, 2007  08:41 PM ET

That's a very good prediction Billy Joel. He was always able to throw strikes and keep the ball away. But even his sneaky quick fast ball isn't sneaky anymore. He can't go to a change up unless its 10 miles slower than his fast ball, about what 75? He was affective with free swingers though. My god $8 Mill? for one year? What's this world coming to. At lest he wasn't juiced. Excuse me , accused of being juiced.

December 23, 2007  11:08 PM ET

Finally, he's gone. His performance wasn't nearly worth the pay he received. Now if the Mets will stop making dumb personnel decisions (i.e., signing players well past their prime and paying them like they are still in their prime and trading Brian Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos and [gulp!] Scott Kazmir for VICTOR Zambrano) and build a legitimate WS contender, I'll be happy.

December 24, 2007  12:33 AM ET

I think Glavine is to be commended for this selfless act! He settled for a measley salary of $8 million just so he could be near his kids. He should get father of the year for this!

December 24, 2007  11:13 AM ET

So many bitter Mets fans, but who is your #4 starter? I'm betting Glavine is better than whoever you put up there.

Glavine isn't the ace you paid for, but he is the back of the rotation guy Atlanta needed last year.

December 24, 2007  02:06 PM ET

Are these Atlanta writers kidding me? Little league and birthday parties? The guy gave up 8 runs in the first inning in the biggest game of the season. We had him for 5 years and he pitched decent for 1 and a half seasons. He couldn't of left fast enough for Met fans. That 8 million wasn't an offer, it was his option off of the original deal. If the Mets would've known 5 years ago that he would pitch the way he did, there would have been no option.
If I have to see one more outside change-up punched into right field, I'd have a nervous breakdown.

December 24, 2007  02:15 PM ET

The best part of his giving up 8 runs and hitting two batters in the first inning was his post-game reaction. He really didn't care. Well the fans who pay your salary cared. They were the ones crying after the game. New York needs players who care. Guys like Paul O'Neill, Lenny Dykstra, Wally Backman, David Cone, Ray Knight, Keith Hernandez and the rest of the guys who cared. What would you be doing without the fans paying your salary? Huh Tommy? You'd be working in a factory in Macon, Georgia making $7 an hour hoping that the next day you'd still have a job and your factory didn't close up and move to India. I'm glad the loss wasn't devastating to you Tommy. Now you can pitch for the Braves and blend right in. Maybe you can send Chipper Jones here. There's a guy who would be devastated after a performance like yours. I'm sure you're ecstatic now Tommy that you get to deal with the minor league media now. You won't have to worry about the pressure of NYC anymore.
Good luck with the strike zone. Who knows, you might get the outside corner again.

December 25, 2007  05:33 PM ET

Tom Glavine is in the ranks of "Professional" with the likes of Cal Ripken and Towny Gwynn. Never made bones about winning or lossing. He has just gone out year after year and made himself a true "Role Model" for the youth of America and abroad. Thank you Tom Glavine. Your career has been a pleasure to follow.

December 26, 2007  09:05 AM ET

He took $2 million less to play in Atlanta. He got a $3 million buyout from the Mets. I still want to know why anyone would give a buyout on a player option.

December 26, 2007  01:41 PM ET

The reason he left to Atalnta was because during the last game of the season he showed no heart and was literally booed out of town.

I cannot wait to see Glavine in that Braves uniform handing out batting practice to everyone else in the NL.
