Buckeyes' trouble with NCAA

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel appreciates the value of classroom success. So he invited his two first-team Academic All-Americans last season, receiver Anthony Gonzalez and fullback Stan White Jr., to join him on a private jet to watch Ohio State's basketball team play in the Final Four in Atlanta. Both players had exhausted their eligibility and signed with agents and were no longer considered current student-athletes. So nice reward for a job well done, right? Not according to the NCAA. Ohio State was forced to self-report a secondary violation after OSU compliance director Doug Archie spotted White and Gonzalez sitting with Tressel. Tressel didn't realize that the rule prohibiting athletes or their families from receiving extra benefits applies to former student-athletes, too. But Ohio State claimed in its NCAA report that the invitation was extended as a way to "cultivate the relationship of future and current donors." That means maybe Gonzalez will send some of his NFL millions back to the old alma mater someday.

I'm not an Ohio State fan, and I still think this is a non-story.

December 23, 2007  11:09 AM ET

yeah there is no point to this,,,,,

Noone hates the Buckeyes more than I do, but this is ridiculous. The NCAA rules committee is just completely out of control.

"That means maybe Gonzalez will send some of his NFL millions back to the old alma mater someday."

I guess they think that Ginn won't work out.

December 23, 2007  11:18 AM ET

No it said that because Gonzo was at the game with Tress....

As a former student-athlete, I will vouch for the idiocy with which the NCAA makes judgments. I went to an SEC school, where I was on the track team. My coach was suspended for 2 meets because 6 years previously, he went on a recruiting trip in his hometown, and his wife tagged along. That's it. Exactly where is the competitive advantage to that? The NCAA is a VOLUNTEER organization meaning schools volunteer to be a part of it - it is NOT a requirement that a school maintain any sort of status with the NCAA, but they do in order to be able to participate in the NCAA sanctioned events. While I agree that there needs to be an organization that maintains order amongst the colleges- to keep every school on a moderately equal playing field. I just think the NCAA needs to focus on more important things like what other tournaments it can buy so as to get the income it needs to run for yet another year.

You know - I have to update my thoughts on this one - think about this - by saying this is a violation - they're suggesting that coaches will attempt to recruit PSA's by saying, "Yeah, and when your done with your eligibility - you get to fly around in the private jet."

SO WHAT!! I believe a student athlete who no longer has eligibility is called a Booster - and boosters can receive anything! This isn't about OSU - it's about the NCAA trying to protect their phony bologna jobs.

There has to be more serious situations to investigate than this!

December 23, 2007  12:06 PM ET

This is pathetic

December 23, 2007  12:09 PM ET

I am on Oklahoma fan and have had to put up with legit violations and stupid violations. This falls in to the incredibly stupid violation category. He rewarded two graduating players who achieved a terrific goal a nice reward for that goal. It hurt no one and it was going to see their own school play a game. The NCAA rules committee are a bunch of idiots.

December 23, 2007  12:12 PM ET

They should spend more time looking into the USC program and all of their violations instead of wasting their time on this non-story.

December 23, 2007  01:15 PM ET

Wow. That's crap. A player can't just hang out with a former coach?

December 23, 2007  01:31 PM ET

From the NCAA website:

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary organization through which the nation's colleges and universities govern their athletics programs. It is comprised of institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals committed to the best interests, education and athletics participation of student-athletes.

Doesn't sound like it to me....instead they are going to punish CURRENT athletes over a stupid rule applied to PAST athletes. That's effectively the same thing as sending YOU to jail because your FRIEND stole from a grocery store....

I've got to agree with the above comments, I'm no Ohio fan, in fact I'm an LSU alumna, but if this is truly all there is to this story these NCAA rule makers and enforcers really, really need to get a life or at least a better hobby.

December 23, 2007  03:05 PM ET

big effin deal

December 23, 2007  04:15 PM ET

Wow. That program is really out of control. I mean-Former players going to a basketball game with their former head coach. That is terrible. Just lower than dirt. Coaches may never think about giving someone anything ever.

Living in Indianapolis, the evil of the NCAA can be felt in my house. My mom works in sports marketing, and for advertising for the Final 4 a few years ago, they made giant basketball shoes and put them around the city with sponsors. One was going to be a car and have dice on the rearview mirror, but the NCAA said no because they didn't want to condone gambling. Those people must REALLY hate Yahtsee.

It was reported that the Ohio Football Coach Jim Tressel will only be dressing 40 players for the Michigan game ???the rest of the players will have to dress them selves.

Did you hear that the Ohio State University library burned to the ground? All five books in the library were completely destroyed and the football team is really upset by the fire; they hadn???t colored in two of the books yet.
