Steroids taint Torre's record?

Joe Torre was not mentioned in the Mitchell report. There was no reason he should have been. But the report raises a question about Torre indirectly. Now, however, it develops that the Yankees' 2000 team was loaded with players who used performance-enhancing drugs before, during or after that season. Between the Mitchell report and unsealed affidavits filed by law enforcement officials, the count has reached 10, including Clemens, Denny Neagle and Jason Grimsley. Others named included Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch, Mike Stanton and David Justice, but the use for which they are cited occurred after the 2000 World Series. If the Yankees hadn't played in the postseason that year and had not been in position to win their third straight World Series, Torre would not have received the acclaim he enjoyed. It would also have made for an earlier start to the streak of seasons without a World Series championship and might have resulted in an earlier departure for Torre.

This is getting annoying. Steroids were everywhere in baseball those years, not just on the Yankees.

"Another general manager said steroids discussions are usually fruitless because no one knows for sure what a player does or doesn???t do. It???s mostly speculation, he said."

Correct. That is why the recommendations of the Mitchell report need to be implamented. Testing, testing, and more testing. There will always be cheaters, be it will be less likely they will get away with it and more likely they will be caught.

Manager records aren't that interesting anyhow.

I'm sure a large amount of the teams they played had 10 or more players roiding as well. The MLB should not touch any of the records set during this era and just give a reminder of the high amound of performance-enhancing drugs that are being used. No asterik next to Bonds. Leave Clemens' Cy Youngs alone. Don't take away championships. Every record is tainted from 1994-2004. It's just the way it is. Now, baseball needs to move on and deal with the next scandal that will come up.

I just finished reading one of the more heart rendering stories involving PEDs that I have seen so far. In today's NY Daily News former Yankees reliever Dan Naulty has a very long personal article that details his steroid use and HGH use and what it did to him. How it first made him the player he was... a journey man reliever in the majors ... and then the person he was to become. It details exactly why taking PEDs is an IMMORAL and hurtful and selfish decision that can and does destroy others and not just the user. The consequences of anyone who uses PEDs cheats others out of their very life goal that they have because they chose not to cheat and therefore lose their chance at making a MLB roster. The ever encompassing consequences details in his story are truly proof of why PED use is immoral and just pure D wrong. PEDs have no place in atheletics, not just baseball, and his story details the reasons why quite eloquently. Go online and read it. Now, in fact.

so now the NYTimes, part owner of the BoSox, wants to smear Torre even though he wasn't named-smeared-in the initial Mitchell/BoSox smearing effort -- every manager of every played named should be equally 'guilty' of failure to notice enhanced performance -- and how did all those brilliant trustworthy holier-than-thou sportswriters miss it, if it occurred?

Thanks for the tip on the story 4192.

There needs to be WADA type testing, or Olympic style testing, for ALL professional sports. There is too much money riding on outcomes, for the athlete, the management, the owners, and especially the gamblers and bettors for this to be ignored. NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, they all should have strict, independent testing.

That is the only way to curb this; I say curb instead of stopping because the cheaters will still find a way, like Marion Jones did. How she passed drug tests is astounding. Same thing with the cyclists.

December 23, 2007  12:13 PM ET

I forgot to mention tennis and golf, too. There are cheaters in ALL sports.

I thought Papelbon's dog ate Torre's records!!

December 23, 2007  12:33 PM ET

I guess we need to test all the players on every team after they win the series now. Just like the tour de France....Let me see now, oh Red Sox, would you please return the rings, you can keep the ball..

December 23, 2007  12:36 PM ET

We'll keep the rings, you can have Donnelly and Gagme :D

RSB, another quick, snappy comment, I see. :D

December 23, 2007  01:03 PM ET

A quote from that dailynews article that struck me.

"I am deeply sorry for the damage I have caused others with my terrible choices."

There are two "I's" and a "my" in there. No "IF's".

An interesting contrast to Pettitte's apology.

December 23, 2007  01:05 PM ET

...not to mention Clemens' apology.

December 23, 2007  01:06 PM ET

I do what I can with what little I have 4192 ;)

December 23, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Oh, wait...

Nevermind.
