Jays ready to spend big, chase Darvish

08:15 AM ET 10.07 | When offered the chance to back off a statement that Toronto could spend $120 million on payroll, Paul Beeston did not. "I don't know when we're going to do it. It could be this year. It could be next year. It's going to be when it's the right deal that's going to put us over the top." ... There's one special free agent out there this year in 25-year-old Japanese pitching star Yu Darvish. Late in the summer, it was reported that Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos and his right-hand man, Tony LaCava, were in attendance at one of the right-hander's key starts for the Nippon Ham. If Rogers ownership was not aware of Darvish before that, it certainly is now, and there's a real possibility of the Jays being in the thick of whatever happens with Darvish.

Toronto needs to save their money.

I think the Blue Jays are better off taking the Rays' approach to competing inthe East. You can't go out and try to out-spend the Yanks and BoSox. You need a strong front office and a smart manager. I think they already saw what happens when you wantonly throw money at players (e.g. Vernon Wells).

It all starts with your scouts. Draft the right players (pitchers) and bring them along. That's where you need to spend the money. Are you listening Cashman!

Don't blame Cashman, blame your ownership.

And thats what the Jays are doing. Under Alex Anthopolous they've increased spending on scouts and international free agents ten fold. They've acquired more draft picks than any other team via compensation picks, heck they even bought a draft pick from Colorado last year! They've also signed more international free agents over the last two years than any other team.
Now, the Jays have the best farm system in baseball according to most experts and scouts. And the system is just so deep.
However, unlike the Rays, the Jays have the money to retain players, and add some from outside the organization when they are ready to compete, which may be as soon as next season.
Also, the Jays have the best GM in baseball.

Indeed. But I think going after a guy like this is straying from that model. Japanese pitchers, especially of late, have not had a great long-term track record in the Majors. They'd be better off spending that money elsewhere.

The problem is, this season the Jays' pitching was terribly exposed. After Romero, Farrell had zero reason to be confident about who was on the mound. Drabek should mature and improve before next season, and Alvarez is very promising. But Cecil didn't do himself any favours, and neither did Morrow who most saw as primed for a breakout season following some marked improvement in his first with the Jays. Losing Marcum wound up hurting more than AA could've possibly seen (although I'd still make this trade today). You can certainly tell he's more concerned regarding starting pitching than any other part of this team.

I don't think Darvish is Dice-K ... different approach, different physical make-up, clearly a different temperament. It'd be great for baseball for someone other than the Yankees/BSox/Phillies to nab a potentiall good player.

sources close to the action, who wish not to be named, think the rangers have the iniside track due to their recent roster addition of Uehara. He and and tatayama are to personally lobby and convince the next great thing to don cowboy boots and cowboy hat, and begin his mlb play in texas...yee haw!
