Illini land Kentucky transfer
Posted: Sunday December 23, 2007 09:33AM ET
After some tough times recruiting shooting guards, Illinois coach Bruce Weber finally has landed a big one. Alex Legion said Saturday he had chosen Illinois over Notre Dame after transferring from Kentucky. Legion cited the presence of new Illinois assistant coach Jerrance Howard, a former Illini player Weber hired before the season to replace Tracy Webster, who left for an assistant's job at Kentucky. Last spring Howard moved to Kentucky from Texas A & M with coach Billy Gillispie as a member of his operations staff. Howard built a bond with Legion during their four months together, Legion said.

Report Offensive CommentWe have plenty of guards coming in from '09 and '10 classes which means were protected if this guy is trouble. Otherwise welcome home Alex!

Report Offensive CommentI think it was just Country Day and Oak Hill. Say what you want about the kid, but he got the ball more at Oak Hill than he did at Country Day and Oak Hill has a LOT more talent. The DCD coach was spoiled by Shane Battier and felt every star should be unselfish and clutch like him.

Report Offensive CommentHe should have gone to Harvard (where his first coach now works). That way, he might make all-conference.

Report Offensive CommentGillespie is a joke!!! Why would you want to stay at a school with someone as incompetant as him??? Kentucky should have never hired that goon. If there was any time to abandon ship, why not get out before it gets worse (which it will). Legion is 18, give him a break

Report Offensive CommentLegion, Trent Meachem, Demetri McCamey and Jamar Smith will make up the Illini backcourt next year. It ain't MSU quality, but it ain't bad.

Report Offensive CommentKevin says "his dad must be telling him to keep swicthing. Illioins is better than Kentucky"
If that were the case, his dad would be an idiot. If this kid continues to be the whiner he seems to be, he and Bruce will get along very nicely. Also, I think you mean his mom. Alex's father has not been a part of his life.

Report Offensive CommentHmm...Gillispie is a joke? I think maybe you should read a little bit more about this guys history before you go making comments as stupid as that. I do believe that he has turned programs around at two schools during his career. You just have to give a guy some time. Nothing is immediate. Nothing is foolproof. Everything is negotiable. As for Legion? He is free to make his own choices. If he chooses to leave Kentucky, the winningest basketball program in the NCAA, and go to Illinois then this is his choice. I just hope that he doesn't regret it later. NO team deserves a player as fickle as he.
