08:13 AM ET 10.07 | While publicly more optimistic than owner Stuart Sternberg, Andrew Friedman was open recently when asked about the future of the club's payroll. "I think the one thing we've learned about Stu is that things change," Friedman said. "He likes to say markets change. Things change. ... Friedman plans to go into this offseason as the Rays have their previous six under Sternberg, with no set payroll figure and the possibility of increasing -- or decreasing -- this year's $41 million, based on opportunities. "I'd expect that it would have some flexibility up and down."

Maddon, you may want to get out of there while you can. Even with a good team on paper and your mad wizard skillz, this franchise is going nowhere.

Too bad for the Rays, I am really crying about that. Seems like they never recovered from the beat down the Phillies put on them in 2008.

Have the Phillies recovered from the beat down the Yankees put on them in 2009?

You gotta think Joe would love to be the Bosox manager, despite all the stress. Would he be the right guy to whip the malcontents on the team into shape, though? I still say step one has to be to publicly execute John Lackey on the first day of spring training.

Are the Ray's owners friends of Bud Selig like McCourt or what? How else could these tightwads even have been able to buy into MLB? Now we have the Astros holding firesales so that another tightwad can purchase them. We can be thankful that the Selig Strategy is backfiring as evident that all teams from his favorite division (AL Least) are busy booking tee times.

Joe, go for the Boston gig, Bro.

Oh, this is really frustrating. This is why baseball has fallen behind football in popularity. Great teams, cheap ownership = same few teams in the World Series EVERY year.

Playing night after night in front of the owner and 12 of his closest friends tends to make an owner rethink how high payroll should be...

if joe maddon makes up his mind and decide to march towards the boston jungle, my believe its that this manager would have good time in boston!!

the red sox could fix lackey and the only thing that this franchise has to do its,,, allow him to play winter ball, and on the regular season the new pitching coach and the new manager should use him twice a week as a starter in the mound!!

this team needs to move. it's not good for the game when a well run and successful organization can't draw fans and hence can't put up a competitive payroll. say what you want about playoffs in 3 out of 4 yrs. but as a twins fan i've seen where there's a difference between making the playoffs and being good enough to win in the playoffs. and you really gotta have some luck to win in the postseason on a sub 50 mil payroll. heck, you gotta have luck to win in postseason on an 80 mil payroll.
