Boston already has post-Epstein plan

08:13 AM ET 10.11 | The phrase heard 'round Red Sox nation was John Henry's observation that Theo Epstein would not be in Boston forever. [Epstein's departure] didn't happen quite so abruptly, but everyone seems to think it will happen soon. How could it not after Henry spoke of the "shelf life" of a general manager and the "pressure cooker" that is the city of Boston? You just don't mention those things if you want to keep a guy in your organization for the next five years. You don't bring up the shelf life of something unless you believe it's drawing to an end. And you don't mention Ben Cherington's name -- which the Sox owners have done every chance they've had -- unless you're preparing your fans for his ascension to the throne.

Theo's got a contract, so it is better to have him ask to be released from the contract than to fire him and have to pay him off to get out of the contract.

i thing red sox are probably doing the right thing to change out epstein and francona, though both have done good jobs over the long term. clearly, the balance of power is shifting away from the east. in order to compete against the angels and texas, need better, deeper pitching.

Weren't the Angels like, ummm,....home for the playoffs? I'm no Boston fan but using the Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles California Watts Edition as a barometer is like Rosie O'Donnell explaining why your diet isn't working.

John Henry has always been a twit. We had him here in Florida and he was a big time weasel. The day he bought the team he said that, "I will build the stadium if the community won't." Within two years he completely back tracked and whined his way out of town.

I can't add to that, but I can certainly compliment it. Beautiful.

Morning, Brotha. Totally agree. Henry probably thinks he's the reason they won those two World Series.

Epsteins moves over the last two years have been very suspect with Lackey and Crawford as two glaring examples. Adrian was obtained, however, at the price of two very talented prospects. How much better would the Sox have been this year with Beltre at third instead of Youk? Money does not make a player better, nor a manager better.

That's been the Red Sox MO for quite some time now.
When they feel someone is no longer part of the plan, they start a systematic smear campaign in the press.
