08:07 AM ET 10.12 | One wonders why we haven't heard this earlier. Amar'e Stoudemire said [Tuesday] night if the NBA lockout wipes out the season, he believes the players will form their own league instead of trying to catch on in Europe. "If we don't go to Europe, we're going to start our own league, that's how I see it," the Knicks forward said. "It's very serious. It's a matter of us strategically coming up with a plan, a blueprint and putting it together. So we'll see how this lockout goes. If it goes one or two years, we've got to start our own league." Stoudemire, who spoke at the 34th street Foot Locker where he debuted his new Nike Air Max shoe, declined to say if there's financial backing in place.

Actually..yeah... he is that stupid. As are most of the NBA players. Such petulant rants are clear evidence that these morons have no clue. Greed is one thing... stupidity is another.
But there will never be aniother chance so maybe they should go for it.
Commisioner LBNique has a nice ring to it. I'm sure the Ringless King would take the job. Then he could just award himself a title and get it over with.

I wouldn't call a few pickup games in front of a bunch of celebrity worshiping fans a "league".
The only thing on exhibit at those games is the monstrous egos these guys carry around and the desperate need these fan-atics have to stay close to the objects of their undying devotion.

These clowns believe they are what basketball is all about. They'll play a few token games and think the fans will became so desperate to see them more that they won't be able to live without them.
The problem is that with the NFL in full swing and the start of hockey fans have enough games to keep them occupied.
Everyone knows that the first few months of the NBA games are pretty much meaningless since the same 4-5 teams will be the favorites. No one cares about what happens in Nov or Dec in the NBA
Once the super bowl is over the NBA players will have about 4 weeks where people might start asking what's going on with the NBA lockout. If they don't get things settled by then they are screwed.
Come March Madness no one will even notice their gone. True fans of the GAME just might re-discover the thrill of watching players who actually want to PLAY and once again experience how much fun it can be.

I hope the house is finally being brought down. I think all major pro sports, especially basketball and football, are headed to a downfall one day. Over expansion and over exposure via media is dilluting the product. Salaries are getting way out of hand, and its the fans who feel the effects. And to see these guys who make more in one 2-3 hour game than most of us will make in one year complaining about money is just sickening. One day the public will have enough of it. There will be a market correction.

Checkout the Grantland columns on ESPN site about creating a players league with fantasy-type draft. Not really serious -- but funny/interesting.

While great players are a draw. Players come and go, it's the team that fans are interested in. The league must do what it has to, to remain solvent. Wake up players.

Don't throw the NFL in with the NBA. The NFL has never been more popular -- fan interest continues to grow. They also have a sustainable long-term CBA/financial direction.
One reason the NFL is so popular is that all teams can compete. Look at a team like the Lions -- they sucked for many years because of poor management (Matt Millen) -- not because of a financial disadvantage.
I think a hard cap and non-guaranteed contracts have a lot to do with that. (actually, I think contracts should be guaranteed -- but purely from a fan's perspective -- it really helps to ensure that all players produce -- or they are gone)

Highly improbable? That's putting it nicely. Are you drinking this early JGB?
Sure it always possible that another group of billionaire businessmen could try to start a new league. It could be done.. but the current group of players wouldn't be the ones they could do it with.
They've already priced themselves out of any new market
