Why Longhorns went with Ash at QB

08:16 AM ET 10.16 | Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin decided that the kid's time has come. He is officially the starting quarterback at the University of Texas, and now the coaches can get down to the business of maximizing his potential. Ash has everything the Longhorns need in a quarterback, except for experience. But now that Harsin has shelved the idea of a two-quarterback system, Ash will get those crucial reps needed to become the leader he will have to be for the Horns to regain their national footing. It was the right call. The platoon system wasn't working, and it was retarding Ash's development. He has the bigger upside and this team needs its best players on the field at each position. It isn't a knock on Case McCoy -- who may be looking elsewhere given the recent developments -- but Ash needs as many reps as he can get for the passing game to catch up with a rushing attack that's finding its stride midway through the season.

Who's Mack going to fire this off season?

Mack Brown has turned the Longhorns into a Circus.

I'm not that impressed with Ash as of yet but keep reminding myself he's a freshmen and didn't come in early.

I am definitely not impressed with the play calling by the coordinators. If this is a learning year, which it is, then enough already with the Boise State novelty formations just line it up and run it at the strength of the line and the edges. On defense, if Manny Diaz wants to run the 3-2-6 then he needs better talent and experience at the safety position.

Who is to blame for "retarding" the defense from tackling?

True Frosh QB, RB, WR, LT, RS Frosh C, Soph RT, OG, TE, WR. They are a wee bit young but have a bright future.

Bad thing, it's a senior safety back there missing assignments and tackles

Yeah. Gideon needs a seat on the bench.

Thought Gideon was a Big Dog? What happened to him?

QUOTE(#11):

Safeties su<k badly. Corners look great. Ash is fine for a kid starting his first game. Better to see if he progresses as the season moves forward. If not, we be in trouble because Case aint it and after that you have.....no one. Playcalling was a bit odd considering Brown was avg. 7 yds carry yet they went to passing plays. Particularly on the goal line.

Didn't see a lot of the game...what was Ash throwing? A lot of bubble screens? only 139 yds passing....

It will be a good one once he gets some experience. Seems he can run it well also...

I said the same thing when we played 'Bama a couple of years ago. Same player. He plays best closer to the line where others can cover the space. He's not a safety that can thrive in the Big 12.

/\/\/\/\/\ Gideon.
