Oakley blasts Knicks' approach

08:06 AM ET 10.17 | Charles Oakley remains a Knickerbockers fan, even if they're not necessarily his cup of tea. [Oakley] hopes to see the Knicks return to the heights they reached in the 1990s, when he and Patrick Ewing patrolled the paint at Madison Square Garden. But Oakley isn't convinced the team's current power forward, Amar'e Stoudemire, is the man to get them there. "Amar'e's good, he's good in his way," Oakley said yesterday at the launch of his clothing collection at K1X's store in SoHo. "He's a West Coast player trying to translate to the East Coast. And the longer he plays in the East, the more his body's gonna get damaged, because he's got to take a beating now."

The idea of the east coast being physical is gone especially how the game is officiated now! But there's truth to what he is saying about Amare.

Oakley is thinking about the east when he played...

... not nearly as physical now.

The days of pounding and physical play are steadily flowing away.

Dirty looks and verbal taunts are about as physical as these modern NBA player are allowed to get in the way of being physical.

Hands off the superstar... get out of their way and don't try to interfere with guys like Kobe and LBNique as they get ready to do their thing.

Defense is being phased out as quickly as possible in the NBA.

Oak wants to return to the good ole days when Knicks won more games ... but never got over the hump.

Although I love Oak and my 90's Knicks, today's b-ball is not the same as it was then. It is a different game. Not sure I will agree with him. The Knicks relly need a good center. Howard, please come to us!

The days of physical front court play is over. I grew up on those Knicks teams and they had the toughest front line in the league, with Oakley, Mason, McDaniels and Ewing(to a lesser extent), but the fact remains if Pat Riley didn't blow the series by allowing John Starks to go 1 for 18, and if OJ didn't go on the run with Al I would have been able to celebrate a NY Knicks championship. And let's not forget bum **** Charles Smith. Dunk the BALL! I'm bitter!!!

Bitter Much, Bro?

You got it, Ep...

... bring back the "banging in the paint" dayz...

lol, I think the 1991 Knicks with Xavier McDaniel had a better chance than the 1992 Knicks with Charles Smith of defeating Chicago.

X Man gave them toughness and put megafear in Scottie Pippen. The series went 7 games and that was after Chicago defeated NY 4-0 during the regular season series.

As for the 1993 Knicks. People fault Riley for Starks' performance, but, he was their "shooter". An all star guard for them at least once and the guy designed to put up those shots... he just missed them.

Additionally, keep in mind that Starks was in for defense as well. In fact, defense is what earned him his initial reputation.

The X-man was one seriously tough dude. I enjoyed his short run with the C's

I'm sure, but that was a huge mistake on NY's part...

... should NEVER had allowed X Man to sign with Boston after the 1991 season.

The minute McDaniel left I knew NY would not beat Chicago.

You can't even taunt anymore!! The new NBA is ****...bring back defense! I can barely get through a game now without falling asleep. I would love it if they brought back the early 90's ball...
