Utley's knee may never be the same

08:12 AM ET 10.17 | Time is no longer on the side of the Phillies. First baseman Ryan Howard will be 32 next season and may not be able to make it to the starting gate in April after undergoing surgery last week to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his left foot. Second baseman Chase Utley will be 33 next season and missed the first 45 games in 2011 because of patellar tendinitis in his knee. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. concedes it is not magically going to disappear. "I don't know if it's behind him," Amaro said. "Is he going to be a 30-home run, 110-RBI guy and hit .300? I don't know that. I hope he is. That will help us. Whatever we get out of Chase is going to help us."

It was a great run.....but look at the aging stars. With the pitching, the pickup of Hunter Pence....they might be able to squeeze out a couple of more post - season appearances, but they won't be running away with it like this year.

....duh...good mgt. would have not gambled a season of fine pitching on hooking up to a post roid roster that has now wasted one full year of great effort from the pitchers....cannot rebuild the position players, but must tweak...will be harder next year with cardinals, snakes, and brewers resurgent.......needed to do more hunter pence type deals earlier and they would stil be playing....mgt. cost em.....

Post roid roster? Do you have any clue? Evidently not.

No one on the Phils (besides Romero, idiot) have even been close to being tied to 'roids. Especially since Utley & Howard were being tested in the minors before they came up. But I do agree that a fair amount of change is needed to rev-up the bats.

I think he's just referring to the post steroid era of baseball.

utley and howard are poster boys for roids and other enhancements...thats why they are both done now that antler spray is illegal....need a younger, more athletic lineup to compete these days....all players in early 30's plus are roid babies...

utley will continue playing, and his numbers will go up next season, does he will still hit 30 homeruns/ and drive 100 RBI'S? most likely, this past season he overcome injuries to his knee plus he miss 45 games, so yes he could have better season next year, about howard he may stay out till mid-season but he should be ready by the second half!!

Utley & Howard - really? I have learned to never say never but I do not see those two guys as likely users let alone "poster boys"

With that pitching they've still got a shot. Also for what it's worth, Ryan Howard's power stats have gone down since the increased testing.

Absolutely no evidence -- or even whispers - -about Howard and Utley. That's the insidiousness of the steroid era abusers ... they tarred even the clean players. Totally unfair accusation on those two, by all accounts.

Major injuries take months and sometime years to get better. I would rather have Utley playing 2nd base in his current condition than Pete Orr on his best day.
