08:14 AM ET 10.18 | And now we can just hope that the Red Sox some day soon meet the Cubs in the World Series. The Boston Red Sox initially wanted Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza to be included as compensation for general manager Theo Epstein, but the Cubs refused, according to major league sources. Talks began a week ago, after Epstein and the Cubs agreed in principle to a five-year deal worth between $15-20 million, sources said. Recently the teams have been discussing minor leaguers as compensation, according to the sources. Aside from compensation, another hold-up in the negotiations is believed to be which front-office personnel Epstein can bring to Chicago.

Seriously?

You can't blame them for trying, what's the worst than can happen for asking other than be turned down.

From the way the Red Sox fans have been dogging most of Theo's free agent signings...Why would it matter what front office guys he takes.....

Yeah, nothing wrong trying to figure out how stupid the Cubs are. Just start high and keep going higher

Rumors are the compensation will either be Zambrano and three minor leaguers or one minor leaguer.

October 18, 2011  09:41 AM ET

It's all silly. Just make Theo take Lackey with him. All square.

October 18, 2011  10:11 AM ET

The flubs will figure out a way to screw this up, they always do

October 18, 2011  10:14 AM ET

How about a case of brew and a bucket of wings then? Maybe One of the Sox starters could pony up.

I think most Boston fans would be perfectly fine with that just as long as the Cubs have to absorb his entire salary.

In my opinion there should be a rule against compensating teams in this situation with players.
Monetary compensation only.

Take Theo, Lackey, his salary and maybe a AA prospect.. and call it even.

I hope the Cubs fans has some $ because Theo likes to spend and the ticket prices will have to cover his mistakes! He was a good guy and worked well with the 2004 idiots, But once they won he got all drunk with glory and wants to spend his way to the top agian. He will take this job as his gateway to Cooperstown. If he wins the WS there his ticket is all set. if he doesn't he will bankrupt the franchise trying!

Remember this is all about HIM not the Cubs and not the Red Sox. He wants to be the best GM in history and will spend every dollar you have to do it!

i agree that the lackey deal was one of the worst if not the worst in team history. dice k has been a league average pitcher for most of his career, and with the way pitcher salaries have gone up the signing was on par. gonzo was a steal, and he produced crawfords deal may have been a little high but hes been a top 25 player up until this year, plus the thought of having him and jacoby in front of gonzo, youk, papi, and pedey, made that signing something everyone was excited about. people can say what they want about theo spending money but the home grown players on the field produce just as much. dont forget the 2005 draft when he grabbed most of those guys.

I would love if Boston told the Cubs they want Zambrano but the Cubs have to eat 75% of the salary as well.
