Will Euro league threaten NHL?

A European league that would compete with his league for players might not worry NHL commissioner Gary Bettman any more than Rob Scuderi on a breakaway would concern a goaltender. Still, a couple of Russians that Sergei Gonchar described as "powerful people" -- Alex Medvedev, deputy executive of Russian energy giant Gazprom, and former NHL star Igor Larionov -- are reportedly intent on bringing world-class hockey talent to Europe if their dream league is formed. Perhaps the likelihood of Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk, Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin bolting North America in their prime to help start a European league that might never work, and risk the permanent wrath of the NHL, is not strong. But maybe the European league would throw big contracts in the direction of New York's Jaromir Jagr and Gonchar in an attempt to land marquee-name players that could be convinced to finish their playing days closer to home.

sounds like an idea , competiotion never hurt anyone...this could lead to a world championship between ice hockey clubs

This reminds me of the early 1970's,when the WHA came along and signed up a number of NHL big guns to give it some credibility. We all know what happened after that!

MLS Europe.
NFL Europe
NHL Europe

I think it could work.
There is fading hockey interest here and winter sports in Europe are big.
There would still probably be interest in Canada.

If by Euro League threatening the NHL you actually mean Gary Bettman threatening the NHL... then yes.

December 26, 2007  02:22 PM ET

Bettman had better move fast to get the NHL in Europe someway, somehow.

Then again, A Euro vs NHL championship series might be interesting.

Definatly not goign to happen.

Hey DS22, MLS Europe - that's a good one, haha *LOL*

There are many nouveau riche Russian power brokers who have large infusions of cash and a strong desire to flaunt it. Look at Roman Abramovich and his purchase of Chelsea... the team has been buying up players as fast as it can since Roman purchased the club. If Medvedev and Larionov can muster up enough capital from a resurgent Russia and its wealthiest capitalists, then there could be a legitimate threat to the NHL... especially if young Euro stars decide that it would be nicer to stay closer to home for the same/more money...

thought we already had this league, just look at red wing roster. will they try to steal our n.h.l stars. paybacks are a b*i*t*c*h.

Seriously? Of course it will threaten the NHL... of course these days, the local Mites, Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams and Midgets are also threatening the NHL....

December 27, 2007  04:28 PM ET

What I would like to see is some sort of "Champions league" like in soccer, applied to hockey, where the best teams of each leagues get to face one another...
It would be entertaining and it might do allot of good to hockey itself...

I know I would much rather pay to see the Montreal Canadiens face the Moscow Dynamo than the Colombus Blue-Jackets...

Happy holidays to you all,

It would be a clear and present danger to the NHL. It would also be awesome. The two league champions could have a Super Cup 7 game finals that the Rangers would win...a lot.
