08:14 AM ET 10.19 | While Prince Fielder chose a candid answer after the Brewers bowed out of the playoffs, Albert Pujols, still in the midst of his postseason, remains mum on his future plans. "It would be really hard to see him in another uniform," Cardinals hitting coach Mark McGwire said. ... In the absence of any recent illumination from Prince Albert, baseball players, executives, writers, fans and all others outside the Pujols Circle are left to ponder one mesmerizing question before the start of this year's World Series. If the Cardinals beat the Rangers, would it increase the odds that Pujols will stay? "Hard to say," teammate Lance Berkman said. "I don't have any idea, honestly," Matt Holliday replied. "I would think it would help."

He'll be 32 in January. This is a really tough call for the Cardinals. 4 years at $100, sure, even $120 with perhaps a club option for a fifth. Beyond that, good luck with an aging powerhitter earning their keep.

the Cards are damned if they do, damned if they don't

Very much agree...can't see him giving the cards another "home town discount"

I'll bet Albert will regret turning down that rumored offer of 9 years, $200 mil.

yea, this one is interesting, the deep pockets, Yankees and Red Sox I have to think are out of it, it's interesting for both parties.

Wouldn't shock me if you're right, though I think to help him save face the Cardinals may keep offer in place, I don't see any team topping that number, perhaps the annual part but for 5 years.

I would be shocked if either team got involved. Well, less shocked if it was the Yankees but shocked nonetheless.

He's never given the Cards a "home town discount" so why even bring it up?

My thoughts as well !!

Winning the World Series will not affect if he stays or not...

His asking price will get driven to the moon though if he has a World Series like the NLCS.

In the end, StLouis re-signed Carpenter to a decent deal. They resigned Berkman as well. Pujols would have already signed if he did not have a no-negotiation policy during the season.

He will test the waters and in the end, StL will bring him back. If you watch the accounting, StL is smart. They have a trim or two to do, but if Albert gets 25m per season, that is only a 9m increase in their payroll. They could trim at least half of that in a contract or two.

It would be hard to imagine him in a different uniform or town. But who could afford his price? At his age he is not going to be worth a 10 year contract.

October 19, 2011  10:11 AM ET

Other than the Yankees and Red Sox, neither f whom need a 1st baseman or a DH, who can afford the contract he's talking about?

October 19, 2011  10:18 AM ET

...maybe it will take a few more years of observation before it clicks with baseball fans, but older players are never worth the money they get for past performance....better for the cards to let him go and use themoney to restock the aging team with fresh athletic talent....

Why not remain a Cardinal anyway? Regardless of the results of this season? Money is NOT the be all and end all of life and I don't say that without knowing it to be true and I'm pretty sure I'm loving life on a heck of lot less money than even the MLB minimum salary.

Uh, no, what does that have to do w/ $tL opening up the coffer$? It's going to take ducat$ to get Pujol$ to $tay on $tL...get it? The market is very limited for him and Fielder though...maybe four or five teams.
