SMU interested in Hawaii coach

SMU is interested in Hawaii coach June Jones as its new football coach, according to a source with knowledge of the school's search. The interest may help explain why SMU is still looking for a coach despite firing Phil Bennett on Oct. 28. Jones' current five-year, $4-million deal with Hawaii reportedly ends in July, and no new deal has been reached. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini has raised around $10 million for the new coach and staff.

Hmmmmm? Let me see now, I could live in Hawaii and keep on coaching a team with a nice winning tradition and lots of fun, or I could live in Texas and coach SMU? I will get back to you- Thanks, June

Do you really think Hawaii isn't working out a new contract for Jones? And if they're not do you really think Jones' next job is at SMU??????

EXACTLY!!!!!!

If money was what drove him, then he would still be a NFL coach!!

Got to agree with the other posters. June Jones would be crazy to go to SMU. He's living in one of the most beautiful places on earth, he's the only game in town and has relative job security. And SMU thinks they can get him by offering more money?

Yeah to live in Dallas, Texas where expectations are unrealistic and he could only hope to be 7th most important football (college and NFL) program in the state.

Got to hand it to SMU - they're taking advantage of the fact their athletic department and boosters don't need to be tested for fantasy inducing drugs.

Not that I feel old or nothing, but June Jones was the quarterback for U of H when I attended. They will not let him go. There is plenty of money in the alumni base (except me). Hawaii polynesian players have heart. SMU is the home of the rich kids. Who would you rather coach?

I think that he`ll take the job in Dallas. One of the reasons the he is paid many millions, is because the way of life in Hawaii is lucrative. One gallon of milk costs what, $30.00 ??, and meat products, well, as you can see, living in Texas, it will be as fun, cheaper and with leftover millions from Hawaii, yeah, the gallon of milk will only be $3.49.

Why would you want to leave hawaii? I live in Ohio and am in the middle of 4 months of gray cold crappy weather....stay June stay, live it up out there, I'm sure you can find another Colt somewhere....

December 26, 2007  12:22 PM ET

The key is Jones' ambition. He's got a good thing in Hawaii, but the games are played in a different time zone and they get low attention compared to the Big 12, SEC, etc. games. If Jones wants bigger and better things, he probably takes the SMU job if it pays enough. If he's content, he stays. Remember, though, he is a good old boy.

Let's be honest, there aren't too many coaching jobs that are so bad that someone would leave them to take over at SMU. Maybe if you were like the special teams coach for Nothern Siberia State U, I could see leaving to take the SMU job, but other than that you're pretty much better off wherever you're at.

It was only a matter of time....

Hey, you can't blame SMU for trying to get a top coach. They used to be a top program with Eric Dickerson and Craig James. I would doubt Jones would be interested, but I don't blame SMU for trying. You got to shoot high if you want to win.

Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech by 45-44 in the last second of the game. LSU beat Louisiana Tech by 58-10 with the 2nd team QB and other 2nd teamers playing in place of Flynn and Dorsey.

I will be amazed if Hawaii can possibly beat Georgia or even stay within 2-3 TDs. Georgia is like nothing they have played this year. Brennan will come back down to earth.

SMU's got the cash to pay a top coach, and as long as that coach can recruit against the big boys, they are sitting on a recruiting goldmine.

I agree with Captain Sunshine. SMU will get back to being a quality program, but I don't see Jones leaving Hawaii. If he's going to leave Hawaii, he's probably earned himself a gig that is at least a step up.

I live in Texas and I agree with you . Hawaii and June Jones are perfect for each other. Hawaii needs to step up to the plate money wise and give this guy a lifetime contract. June needs to quit having brain cramps and realize... YOU LIVE IN FREAKING HAWAII.... You are a god there and are starting to get top recruits. They just got a commit from the QB at Katy who led his team to a 16-0 record and in the top 5 in every HS poll in the country..................Hmmm,Now maybe if the move was as head coach at Texas and living in Austin,maybe..... but SMU.....#@#@ NO
