Coughlin: Giants won't rest starters

06:07 AM ET 12.27 | There is plenty of debate about how the Giants should approach Saturday's game with the unbeaten Patriots: rest players and leapfrog their focus to the playoffs, or try to keep the Patriots from becoming the first team to finish a season 16-0. The opinion of Coach Tom Coughlin is the one that matters. And between Monday and Wednesday, Coughlin gained a stiff measure of resolve -- and a sense of humor on the subject. "The janitor went by once, and I grabbed him," Coughlin said. "I wanted to make sure that I could bounce it off him." With the janitor's blessing, apparently, and the enthusiasm of his players, Coughlin decided that the Giants will give the Patriots their best full effort. All the usual players will start, and there is no plan to remove them early.

yup... that's what I will do.... If you want to be 16-0... EARN IT!!!

December 27, 2007  06:27 AM ET

I will laugh if the Pats lose or Brady gets hurt. If they don't win the Superbowl, their regular season record won't mean anything...

December 27, 2007  07:00 AM ET

tom gambles with his job now. if he loses starters or gets blown out, the headlines in the apple for the next 2 weeks will be screaming for his skull.

December 27, 2007  07:47 AM ET

I think he's right. You have to start your starters, if even for only a short while. It is still football season, right? They are starters for a reason, right? If you start to get blown out, then maybe it's time to see what your backups can do, but I don't agree with laying down at this point.

December 27, 2007  08:14 AM ET

Yeah, I'll pay good money just to see Brady getting injured and fails to make it even to the Superbowl.

This guy is not as good as he seems, they win games because Belicheat is doing "something" that some teams doesn't know.

December 27, 2007  08:16 AM ET

Of course they will begin with their starters. The game will dictate how long they stay in and how conservative the play calling is on both sides. Both coaches are opening themselves up for criticism if guys get hurt. It is not fair, but it will happen.

December 27, 2007  08:17 AM ET

pressure is on the cheatriots so.... why not?

December 27, 2007  08:29 AM ET

I'll believe it when I see it. Coughlin doesn't want to go down in the history books as the coach of the team that lost to the team that set a new NFL record for the most victories in a regular season. I hate to say this Tom, it's inevitable!

December 27, 2007  08:30 AM ET

Why would you want a star QB to get injured?

December 27, 2007  08:38 AM ET

Yeah. No reason to rest 'em. Let a few more join Shockey on the IR.

You are either a.) being sarcastic or b.) haven't watched a Patriots game in the last five years. My hope is for the former.

December 27, 2007  08:57 AM ET

Thois is why Coughlin blows and will lose his job..he should be preparing for tampa bay not worrying about a meaningless game..if he loses against a very beatable Bucs squad his a.ss is grass.

December 27, 2007  09:06 AM ET

I can't believe there are still people out there hanging on to the "cheating" angle as an explanation for the Pats success. What is that "something" they are doing anyway?

December 27, 2007  09:06 AM ET

Thats a lie. He knows it. The 2nd half will be a mini-camp. We're not stupid.

They win games because they play disciplined & virtually error-free football. Tom Brady finally has some talented receivers to throw to. I've always felt (prior to this year) that the Patriots were not taking full advantage of Brady's ability. My only question to the Patriots org is: What took you so Long?

December 27, 2007  09:09 AM ET

And the Pats arent cheating...and their 'cheating' obviously had no impact on their championship winning capabilities. I'm sick of hearing it. Its a silly excuse.

I'm just worried about February. Do I want to hear Patriots fans squawk for the next 40 years or do I want to hear Cowboys fans do the same for all of next season. Honestly...as a Giant fan in the northeast, I really have no idea whats worse.

I agree on your statement about cheating. The Patriots defense played a major part in their SB wins. Has anyone stated that they were stealing offensive signals as well? What year were the QB's "miked up"?

On the second point, that is what is known as a "lose/lose" situation. I'm a 41 year Cowboy fan. I've been waiting too long for just a playoff win. I'll discuss the SB after the NFC & AFC championship games.

December 27, 2007  09:22 AM ET

Weird they are going to show the game on NFL NBC and CBS too bad they can't get a better broadcast team Gumbel is garbage

December 27, 2007  09:24 AM ET

CowboyDave...I dont mind most Cowboys fans. Its usually the bandwagon riding, no sense about football Cowboys fans that I'm talking about. Its like they re-invented sliced bread and Tony Romo's face is on the package.

As a Giant fan...I've been waiting awhile myself.

Since I've been posting on this blog, this is probably the most assinine comment I have ever read. Brady is not as good as he seems? I absolutely hate the Pats but Tom Brady is as advertised. What else does he have to do? Three Super Bowl rings with mediocre receivers and after this season he will own the single season touchdown record. Give the guy his props. And to top it off he's banging supermodels. I'd give my right testicle to be that guy right now.
