Phillies' closer up in the air ... again

08:11 AM ET 10.24 | After his 2011, Ryan Madson is likely to cash in, though it may be a matter of where. The Phillies would like him back in 2012, but the love is conditional. Ruben Amaro Jr. has said few definitive things since the season ended, but one was his desire for a "proven closer" -- Madson or not. "I don't feel comfortable with the guys we have internally," Amaro said. "If Ryan does not sign, we might have to go outside the organization. There are some people in our system who think [Justin] De Fratus or [Phillippe] Aumont can do that. I am not convinced of that yet." The irony, of course, is that Madson did not fit the bill of "proven closer" before 2011.

The Phillies declined on Lidge, Oswalt and won't resign Ibanez. That saves around $37 million, minus the buyout amount of $2 million. $8 million to sign Rollins, $6 million to sign Madson and an additional $4 million for extending Hamels. That leaves $17 million for Kubel and three relievers in the bullpen.
Now, if we can just get rid of Baby Huey (Joe Blanton) and Polanco!! These two guys are way.... overpaid. Put Martinez at 3B and find a great set up man.

Phillies currently have 9 players under contract for 2012 in the amount of $112 million which is $53 million less than 2011 but 16 players short of a full roster. You didn't add in a raises for Pence or Kendrick who are still arbitration eligible either.
