One day after losing to Purdue in the Motor City Bowl, Central Michigan appears on the verge of losing its coach. Chippewas first-year coach Butch Jones, a disciple of the spread offense, has emerged as a strong candidate to become the next West Virginia head coach, ESPN reported Wednesday during its bowl coverage from Detroit. Jones will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., today for a second interview with West Virginia officials, the network reported. Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden and Florida assistant Doc Holliday met with WVU officials earlier this month, and reportedly still remain under consideration.

Why aren't you interviewing Brian Kelly?

December 27, 2007  09:22 AM ET

After what happened with Jimbo Fisher, maybe Butch needs to make sure everyone at WVU is on the same page before he agrees on anything there.

Same conference plus he just took the job last year and had success.

WVU..CMU... WTFC?

December 27, 2007  10:05 AM ET

WVU should offer Jones the job. The way he coached, even in the bowl loss, to Purdue is exactly the way you want to operate a spread offense and WVU has the potential/talent to be the best spread offense in college football next year (because they should have been this year). Neither Slaton nor White are NFL ready yet

This is absolutely awful. CMU is really building something. Plus they hae hit with their last two coaching hires with Kelly and Jones. I don't know if they can go three in a row... I was there for the DeBord years.

Doc Holliday should have been offered the job a week ago. They'd be lucky if he'd even accept it now. He has too much class for these bozos. They may get stuck with Terry and that'll set the program back for years. The Fisher fiasco is classic WVU buffoonery...the eers always shoot themselves in the foot.

This would be a good choice.

After watching his team play "Lloyd Carr Michigan Prevent Defense", this guy should be fired. All the "prevent defense" does it prevent you from winning. Dumbest strategy in the history of all sporting competition.

Is hiring a coach away from a program he just joined a year ago a good route to travel when you just had a coach bail on you shortly after signing a long term contract extension? I don't think so. WVU needs to stop looking at guys just because they have a similar offensive style to Rodriguez and pick a guy who is a good fit for West Virginia, and will be dedicated to staying until the job is done.

I don't think kelly would go to wvu if he didn't want the michigan job(michigan is a better job). Also why would he go to wvu when he can stay at cincy and recruit ohio, michigan, indiana, pennsylvania and steal a few kids from florida and jersey? He has a better recruiting ground and it's a lot more to do in cincinnati than it is to do in west virginia.Better facilities as well at cincy....GO BUCKS and CINCY!!!

Honestly, I don't think anyone should be offered the job until after the bowl game is over. I don't know why Doc Holiday, or anyone else for that matter, should've been offered the job until everyone that WVU was interested got interviewed as many times as they saw fit.
I could understand Holiday not being interested if WVU had offered the job to someone else and had been turned down ... Like Michigan did.. What was Rodriguez... the 3rd or the 4th choice??
WVU officials would be doing the program, Interim Coach Stewart, the players and the fans a huge favor by not offering the position to anyone until after the bowl game.

I will say that what part of the game I did see last night.. Butch Jones' play calling put Rodriguez's to shame.

WVU is going to blow now that rod is gone like they all ways did.

December 28, 2007  04:21 AM ET

somehow i have a feeling WVU is going to screw this thing up one way or another.

Let me look up today's bowl schedule - can use it to guess the next rumored WVU candidate... does TCU, Houston, or Maryland run the spread?
